Hobart Pasha. IN 18 GS '(says ' "Vanity <fair,') the Turkish Government requested the British Govern^ nient to send R naval officer of rank to organise their navy, and, the Foreign Office granting their permission, the Admiralty was asked to find au admiral willing to go. There was little difficulty in finding one, the promised salary being something like .£7000 per annum, and there was any amount of scrambling for the prize. Their Lordships .took such a long time considering the claims of the numerous applicants that the Turks became tired of waiting, and they accepted the services of Captain Hobart. The authorities at Whitehall selected Admiral Sir William Wiseman, Bart., K.C.B., who conducted the naval operations in the last New Zealand war, and informed thc Turks of then* choice. Thc New Plant. THE Prickly Comfrey is coming into much favour as a fodder plant, and the annexed directions for cultivating and using it, from a reliable source, are worthy of attention : Prickly comfrey being a deep-rooting plant, the soil should be moved ns recommended below, ' or by a subsoil plough. On tho alluvial flats, where lucerne succeeds, prickly comfrey will thrive with similar cultivation In stiff land dig one spit deep, and loosen the ground ten inches deeper with a four tiued fork. Put on the bed a good coating of ? well-rotted manure, and scatter a little bono dust upon it. Dig this into tho top soil. Divide tho roots into cuttings an inch and o-half long, and plant them perpen- dicularly, thin ends downwards, the top being three inches below tho surface. Plant off-shoots from tho crowns in a similar manner. A little damp sand will improve the roots and oft'-shoots when planted.
