Catching On to It . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 14 February 1902

Catching On to It . KJOMETIME since the Live Stock World BJ seut a member of its staff into Minnesota and the Dakotas to investigate the resources of the country and its progress in live stock production . His report attracted attention all over the country and was extensively reproduced even by the Minnesota and Dakota press , showing conclusively that beef cattle and hogs will soon supersede wheat as the principal crop . E . W . Randall , of Hamline , Minn ., secretary of the Minnesota State Agricultural Society was recently interviewed by the Drovers Telegram on the subject , and stated that the association is endeavoring to foster the beef industry , adding : There has been a great impetus to the feeding of cattle in the past year or two , ? . said he , and particularly since the varif ous beef breeds have been making such • gneat displays at the Hamline show ; So fair aa the northwest is concerned , the beef industry is in its infancy and there wlllbe an immense demand for pure...

U ' ' Don't Plant Too Much . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 14 February 1902

U Dont Plant Too Much . VSORN planting this spring is to be on a | jg boom scale . From every section of the belt eome reports of the same tenor . Pastures and meadows will be added to the corn area and every effort tnade to plant every possible acre with thc king of cereals . To a large extent this policy is illadvised , Seed corn is already abnormally high and much of the crop of 1902 will of necessity be planted with inferior seed . Farm horses are scarce and high-priced and labor is affected by similar conditions . The excessive area will , naturally , not receive the best cultivation and Biuoh of the seed put in will be listed . All this indicates an expensive crop with cultivation methods not calculated to assure maximum yield . •? * , >/ : Tbo many farmers plan more work than they can accomplish and this -corn enthusiasm is based on that error . A limited area sown with good seed and handled on approved methods will give the best satisfaction and profits . Dont be ...

__/ l Lesson of the Drouth . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 14 February 1902

__/ l Lesson of the Drouth . flHESSONS of the drouth are going the I EM rounds of the agricultural press numerously just now , but none is more forceful than the need of a certain supply of stock water . In many sections of the dry belt this winter stock water has been scarcer than feed . Owners who had plenty of fodder to rough their cattle until grass time were compelled to ship them to market in unsalable condition simply because the water supply had given out . Last summer stock was driven ten and fifteen miles to water , a process that put profits out of the question . This state of affairs on farms that have been tilled fifty years or more does not speak well for the enterprise of the owners , but if they learn the lesson taught by the drouth the experience will haver heen profitable . The well borer is a far more sensible and profitable individual than the rain maker and he leaves a permanent improve ment behind him . Those who wish to do yoa the * le * rt good , wiU he your ...

An Old Timer s Yarns About Stock Foods . I see by tlio LIVE STOCK WOULD that Curtiss , tho Iowa man Is feeding a big bunch of steers at Odebolt to discover If these stock feeds are worth anything said tho . ^ ome Points old timer as the afternoon group formed For Curtiss . at the Exchange building yesterday , Curtiss is a brainy fellow but ho hasnt been feeding eattle as long as I have and I flatter myself that I could give him a few pointers that assay well . These stock foods are good . Tho men who make them know [ thc medicine an animal needs and work ou the principle that it is easier to prevent disease than cure it . The only objuction I have to the stock foods is their excessive cost . I compound my own at a fraction of the market quotation of the standard brands , but the man who cant do his own compounding isnt throwing his money away when he buys stock feed and pays the man wbo puts it up several hundred per cent profit . « * # # What dope do I use ? responded the old timer...

Before the Dupage Connty farmers Institute George B . Van Norman delivered a pithy address in which ho scored the scrub steer as worthless , advised the general farmer to use dual purpose animals and warmly urged support of the National Live Stoek Association in its contest with the Leather Trust over the duty on hides . Among the salient features of tho address were the following : There Is no state that can produce or has produced better stock than Illinois . Still , thore is a great chance for improvement ln some sections of our state for some farmers are still breeding scrub and it Is more common among our dairymen . w e all kaow and realizj the scrub steer sells for 51 . 50 aud ? 2 . 00 per 100 lb less than the grade and weighs 200 lb less at the the same . ige . Col . Chittenden On 'Reservoirs . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 14 February 1902

Col . Chittenden On Reservoirs . The February is . sue of the No .-Ui American Review contains an article of fourteen pages , written by Capt . IL M . Chittenden , ot Sioux City , on Government Construction of Reservoirs in Arid Regions . It is the most complete argument that has been prodnced in favor of federal appropriations for erecting and maintaining reservoirs to furnish water during the late summer , when it is needed so badly throughout a large part of the United States . Of the 3 , 000 , 000 square milos of area included in ths main portion of tbe nation , it ia C 3 tU * r . a : ed that 43 per cont Is arid or semiarid , ia which crops cannot be reliably cultivated without Irrigation ; and that there Is not water enough possible to bo bad to Irrigate more than one tenth ot this land which needs Irrigation . This leaves a maximum of from 70 , 000 , 03 !) to 100 , 000 , 0-W in which M is practicable to artificially apply water for purposes of agriculture . The cost of reservo...
