The Cattle Disease . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 29 August 1868

The Cattle Disease . ¦ The excitement as to the cattle disease . !**! subsiding , except lu some of the districts where it prevails . If the opinions of those who have investigated the disease are correct , the disease has done , most of its work ; at the commencement of frost it will cease , and the greater care to keep the infected cattle separated from others , and to keep ¦ native cattle from grounds occupied by the Texas cattle have already much reduced the mortality . A quarantine has been established at the Chicago Union Stock Yards , into which all diseased or suspected cattle will be sent . Measures have been taken by the State or city authorities at all the leading Eastern cattle markets , which it is thought will prevent the sale of attested cattle . We can confidently hope for the suppression of the disease in a very short time . Great loss has already resulted , and additional loss cannot be avoided , but the safest course now is to leave stock where it is—that is not t...

Second-Hand Farming . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 29 August 1868

Second-Hand Farming . Some time ago , In the Club Reports , a letter from the foreman of some great former was rejected . THE WESTERN RUBAL of Chicago remarks : If any man , whether he live on land of his own , or is working another man s land as foreman , or a herder of cows , can instruct the mass of farmers ln anything , let him do It , and let nO reporter , editor , or reader ignore his instruction if It be good . None of us know so much of our own business that we can afford to reject any useful knowledge concerning it . We reply that English and foreign methods do American farming no good . In England the best formers are foremen , therefore instruction from them Is proper . In this country the best farmers are the owners , and we want to hear from those who know most , not from those who know least . No kind of business can prosper if it is to be learned from Journeymen and apprentices . We object decidedly to giving encouragement to tbe large farm system demanding a class of...

- . ¦ ¦ .. :: ¦ ¦¦; Iri » h Oat * . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 29 August 1868

- . ¦ ¦ .. :: ¦ ¦¦; Iri » h Oat * . We were pleasantly reminded of the old cOiintry the other day by seeing a magnificent sample of oats brought to our office hy a gentleman who ; had just arrived from Ireland , and brought the specimen to show Canadians what could be raised in spite of drought and adverse seasons * , for crops of all kinds have been exposed throughout the whole of Great Britain to , the same scorching ordeal that we have experienced in this countrv . Such , however , is the abundant moisture of the Emerald Isle , that we are informed they have suffered less from the drought than , the sister country ; and certainly the sample before us speaks well for the fertility of the soil and the skill In culture that . could produce so luxuriant a growth . The straw is between six and seven feet long , stout and strong ln proportion , and the heads are heavy and well filled . The sample was taken from the farm of VT . Watson , Esq ., of Ballanrath , near Edenderry , in King s...
