Published Monthly by Sheffield Farm , Glendale , Ohio . January , 1911 Our Policy for 1911 . The policy for our Berkshire Department in 1911 will be the same as has been pursued in the past . We have undertaken some definite work along constructive lines . We are breeding Berkshires because we believe in them . Of course we expect a reasonable profit but profit is not the uppermost thought . Back , of it all , is the desire to de velop Berkshires that will improve the breed , and be of permanent value to agriculture . Our type is the best and biggest hog developed in the shortest time and on the least amount of feed . We are not trying to produce either the so-called small type or the misnamed big type Rather do we hope to develop a quick-developing , easy-feeding hog , true to...

Farmers Should Buy Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Farmers Should Buy Berkshires Loami , 111 . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —I notice you want a letter from the breeders of Berkshires , stating facts as we see them . Now that is the proper way to get at a thing . Get facts , and not a bunch of hot air , simply to fill pages ; but honest mens honest opinions . You have asked for what you want , and I agree with you—that it will accomplish much good , if our good men will just take a few minutes and write you . As for myself , let me say I am a • recent convert to the Berkshire ranks , having spent eight years with the highclass Poland-Chinas — Polands that were bred right and as good as the best—and can say after nine months of breeding , feeding and selling highclass Berkshires I did more business in those nine months than in any two years of my Poland experience . The field is unlimited . Good men in every State in the Union are writing for prices and buying the quality that meets the object they have in vi...
Way Down East [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Way Down East Our Eastern breeders should bear in mind that F . W . Edgecomb , Cornish , Me ., has for sale a registered Jersey bull , some young Berkshires of either sex , and sows bred . We have never had the pleasure of inspecting Mr . Edgecomb s farm animals , but these Yankees are usually good business men and we have reason to believe that our readers will be nicely treated by Mr . Edgecomb . We trust that breeders in New England and the Atlantic States and those in the Middle East will remember to write Mr . Edgecomb and get description and breeding of what he is offering for sale . Surely they can be satisfied with his offering and save freight and express charges on their purchases .
Pigs Fed by the Dietrich Sys tern . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Pigs Fed by the Dietrich Sys tern . One of the first Berkshire breeders to adopt the Dietrich system of swine feeding was Mr . John F . Myers , Millersburg , Ohio . Mr . Myers is a very deserving young- man and gives unusual thought to the care of his Berkshires . By the Dietrich system he is able to produce Berkshires with size , and as he uses only the best of breeding stock , he is in a position to offer splendidly bred animals with size and quality . Mr . Myers Is also willing to take a fair profit on his Berkshires , and our readers can feel safe in trusting their orders to him , as he will send out only first-class animals and at a price that will be within the reach of everyone . He is not a cheap John but believes in fair , coiiservative prices for animals of merit .
Boar Trade Good [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Boar Trade Good Cascade , Iowa . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —The outlook for Berkshires is bright in my locality . I sold more boars this year , since I quit attending the local fairs . Expect to be nearly sold out by January 1 st of those of suitable age . When I get a buyer to call , I sell every time . They say they are all right . They are a large hog . All that is wanted is to get them in good feeder s hands and they will show for themselves . Very truly yours , E . Brietbach .
All Sold Out . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
All Sold Out . Smyrna , Tenn . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 , Gentlemen . - . ^ Just at present Berkshire prospects for 1911 look mighty good to us . This year has been one of great activity in our trade , and we have not been able to supply the demand . We could have sold twice as many as we have been able to raise , so that now we have nothing but breeding stock left , expect two choice gilts , and these we are growing for the Tennessee Berkshire Association sale at Nashville , on February 15 th . We have some beautiful litters of Winter pigs , that will be ready for the trade in February and March . We are planning to increase our number of brood sows and be ready for some more trade . That s how much farh we have in the Berkshire and the demand for Berkshires . Very truly yours , Jno . F . Tucker & Son .
Is This "Square" ? [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Is This Square ? Kinderhook , 111 . Gentlemen : —In response to your request for a letter on how to advance in Berkshire business , my mind keeps in view the editorial Men and hogs in the December issue . By breeding pure-bred hogs men ought to improve in finances , intelligence and character . In regard to finances it is a very essential thing , as the best quality foundation stock must be purchased and maintained . He must advertise so others may know that he has the hogs for sale . He must visit shows , sales and other herds , that he may keep in touch with other breeders and his herd up to the standard of excellence . In return he must have recompense for his worthy animals above the ordinary pork prices prevailing or he could not long continue in the business . He must also have intelligence , for without that no continued improvement in breeding or mating to maintain or excel the high standard of perfection in his herd is possible . As is well known , we develop our powers by ...
Great Dearth of Breeders . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Great Dearth of Breeders . Colvilie , Wash . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 ... . : Gentlemen : —Replying to yours of the 10 th , I regret that I am unable to comply , with your request lor something of interest to your readers . No one recognizes my limitations any better than myself . However , if a statement from me as to the existing conditions here will lead to the introduction of a larger number of Berkshires in this vicinity , I am constrained to comply . Never will there be . such a dearth of breeders as confronts us today . This was caused by the extremely high price of dressed hogs , regardless of size or condition . The local butchers paying 13 cents , the result was every farmer sold out clean , leaving-such an opportunity for placing pure breds by wide-awake Berkshire breeders as will not occur again in a long time . And right here is where the Washington Berkshire Association went home ; for all the good they have done , they might just as well be non-existent...

Famous Boars of the Breed [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Famous Boars of the Breed Rival s Champion 112500 Lees Artful Belle 62 d 100869 ... Rival s Champion Best 127963 . Farrowed April 2 , 1909 . Bred by Kinloch Farm , Kirksville , Mo . Owned by Rookwood Farm , Ames , la . Rarely , if ever , has it been the lot of a sire to leave sueh a marked impress on a breed as has been left by Lord Premier and Lord Premiers Rival . The Berkshire breed has been blessed with many great sires ; but tht really great sires are comparatively few , after all . A sire that gets a few outstanding good animals sometimes receives the credit of being a great sire , and may easily be overrated . It is the sire that continues to sire large numbers of outstanding good animals , and whose progeny goes on reproducing types of superior excellence that is justly entitled to distinction . Among the recent Berkshire sires there is one hog that has an outstanding reputation of this kind—that is Lord Premier s Rival . The blood of this great hog has improved every herd i...
News From Highwood . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
News From Highwood . Highwood , Dundee , N . Y . The Berkshire World : Gentlemen : — Business during the past year has been very satisfactory to the eastern Berkshire breeder . For some reason Berkshires lately seem to just naturally boom themselves in the east and south . While we do not have boom prices here in the east , good stock sells at a satisfactory figure . We have no sales of $ 5 , 000 . 00 and $ 10 , 000 . 00 boars ; but for all the boars reputable eastern breeders can raise that are worth $ 100 . 00 or $ 200 . 00 there is a ready sale . The bulletin recently issued by the New York State Department of Agriculture is of interest . In this is compiled the numbers of various pure bred animals in the state , owners , etc . There are something over 5 , 000 registered hogs in the state and over 2 , 900 of them ( over half ) are Berkshires . A glance at the advertising pages of most any eastern or southern publication will show that Berkshires are selling for about twice the pr...
