The city has been tin ronghly canvassed during the past two weeks on the question of taking Btock in the Nashville and North western Railroad Company, and levying a tax on ihe people to pay the mime. I5y a law of the State no city, county or town can eulvcribe more than one-fifUenth in value ofils taxable property. The proposition here i to take such nraount of stock in the Nashville and Northwesn Railroad aa will amount to one-fifteenth of the value of our taxable property. It if estimated that it will be $250,000, more or Ws. The road claims, we believe, that it will reach $270, 000 to $300 000. If the tax is voted, the a mount is to be leviml and paid in cah in three equal annual instalments; and the tax U to bear projiortionally "on all jroperly and taxabla in the city, including pulls, privileges and tnerch,tnltze, be."
