We should think (hut the writer of a communication signed "Kanawha," in the Charleston Republican of the 24th inst., the day before election, would feel rather bad over the result in that county. He appealed to the two you ng men, Mc Whorter and Cracraft, who were the Union candidates, to retire from the field and allow Judge Summers to be elected by general consent. He said it would be "a graceful and disinterested act" in them to do so. Nothing was said of how the act might be regarded by the Union people who nominated them. That was a consideration that evidently had no weight with the writer. His ostensible reason for wanting the Union nominees to retire was that Judge Summers, be* ing a man of great experience, learning and ability, would become *'the leading znan" In the Legislators, if elected,...

The news from Maryland this morning is ominous of difficulty. Governor Swann has at last made public his conclusion to remove the Baltimore Police Commissioners. In doing so he intimates that the Administration at Washington stands at his back, and, if necessary, will forcibly interfere on his ?behalf. No one doubted this understanding from the outset. Tbs whole movement to remove the Commissioners has been understood as an Administration programme. The legislature to be elected under the registry law of Maryland will be called not only to ratify the Congressional Amendment, but also to elect a United States Senator, and it has been plain all the timo that Mr. Johnson was bent on not only defeating the Amendment, but also upon . the defeat of Senator Creswell's re* election, Gov. Swann would never have dared to attempt...
