Arizona Sentinel. SATUBDAY. MAJWJI S, 1S79. Our Korthcrn.Kordcr. The most northern part of Ari zona is still comparatively unex plored. Our northern boundary lies "190 miles north of Prescott, so that there is yet room there for discovery and adventure. A popular impression is that most of this northern country is of sedimentary formation, sterile and made impassable by deep canons with precipitous walls. This impression is confirmed by stories of the "Painted Desert," by Major Powell's grand descrip tion of the deep canons through which he followed the Colorado river, and by the reports of scien tists who have examined Ari zona's great coal-measures of sand and limestone. There is no re cord of any exploring party hav ing traversed that part of Ari zona lying north of the Big Canon oftthe Colorado riversince Escalante's expedition, in 1776. But individuals are now making incursions into this unknown part of our country, and are car rying back accounts that are rap - idly narrowing ...

Abizona Sentinel, SATURDAY, 21 AliCH 15, 1S79. Our JPapaso Country. During a recent trip into the Papago country, south of the Gila river, wo were much gratified to find many of our predictions veri fied in regard to that part of Ari zona, and all that we have ever written about it more than cor roborated by facts falling under our observation. Tho desert along tho Gila affords no indica tion of the more attractive coun try lyingsouth, beyond the moun tains. The rainfall is greater, grass is abundant, and there is a good deal of .shrubbery and tim ber. The Papago Indians raise wheat, corn, pumpkins, etc., without irrigation, and have plenty of fat cattle and horses. But rich mines are what give that Papago country its greatest attractions. Great deposits of copper, lead and antimony have long been known there. Prom the Ajo mine, fifteen years ago, were shipped over 300 tons of cop per ore, that carried gold and sil ver enough to pay the enormous cosfc of transportation to San Fran c...

Aeizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 1879. It. C.3IcCormicU, A quaint but elegant pamphlet has reached our table, entitled "Eanquetto the Honorable Rich ard C. JMcCormick." It was printed for private distribution, by C. "Whittingham, at the Chls- wick Press, London. Mdccc LxxViii; and the quality of the paper, the broad margins, cap tions, vignettes, initial letters, finials, type, and, in fact, the whole style, or " make up," re minds us of the sixteenth cen tury, and one almost expects to find the text printed in black let ter. Aside from alt this the con tents are of great interest to all Americans. A committee of the American exhibitors at the late Exposition at Paris requested Mr. jtfcCor mick to name a day for a compli mentary dinner and the presen tation of two works of art, ten dered by them. The 26th of November was appointed, and the grand banquet hall of the Centennial Hotel, known as the " Salle des Fetes," was selected as the locus, and was profusely and appropriately ...

Abizona Sentinel. SATURDAY. MARCH 29, 1879. It i3 astonishing, the alarm that is felt among certain classes over the amount necessary to pay the arrears of pensions, and some of these same journals go so far as to predict a bankrupt Treasury should the law be carried out. Another sensitive class are very apprehensive that it may lead to the expenditure of some of the die millions Secretary Sherman is hoarding to keep off the scare of resumption. How ridiculous all this sort of reasoning must strike the public mind. Suppose it will take $35,000,000, or S100, 000,000, to pay the first pledge of the war to provide a reasonable pension for those who suffered and gave the most for its prosecu tion; what other claim, we would like to know, has a prior right to the one due the maimed and disabled soldier? Of course we are constantly told that the bond holders, a large proportion of whom did not originally risk .more than thirty-five or forty cents on the dollar in their invest ments, are t...
