I. §^n ARMING face!" « "Such a Puritan face!" jj2«'/i "Those shoe-buckles are worth their weight in gold; and as for the spin-ning-wheel, it is a family heirloom — a kind of mascot, yon know." "Oh yes; Miss Mortimer values it as she does her life. It took a heap of persuasion to borrow it, even for this performance. They say, if any calamity is about to befall the Mortimer family, the wheel is always seen to revolve slowly, as though manipulated by ghostly fingers." "Yes, it's quite one of the family itself, and — but sh-li-hl Bern's Miss Mortimer herself. Do you suppose she overheard us?" and the bevy of voices sank into a whispering buzz as a majestic old lady drew near, her tall form clad in heavy silk, her silvery hair covered with a cap of antique point and her lingers glittering with jeweled rings, folded over a carved ivory fan. ll er eyebrows were drawn together with a frown that boded little good to the group of idle chatterers...
