A Fire Department. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 December 1849

A Fire Department. The disastrous fire which has recently occurred in <tur town, jeopardizing so large an amount of property, a* well as perilling human lif.. should awaken our citizen* to the importance of the adoption of speedy measures for the orpinization of a fire department of some character There has not been a solitary individual since Sun Francisco commenced its rapid growth, who lias not predicted a fire at some period or another and dreaded the event. And yet the Ayimtumiento and the citizens generally, satisfied, as they could not fail to be, of the immense loss which must result from a conflagration, quietly contented themselves with the sage doctrine of "sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." N'„ steps wsre taken to trample under foot the fire king, when his hot breath should be felt upon tho land, and day after day the danger became more probable, more imminent. At last the 1110. ment came: when the town was bushed in slumber and the c'|uiet of night...

IV Fin A Orrmt Chtrwbrlitk. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 December 1849

IV Fin A Orrmt Chtrwbrlitk. On the ground burned over by the disastrous fire of Tuesday last extensive preparations are being made, we are happy to remark, for immediate rebuilding, and in a style of beauty and grandeur, equally worthy, with the former structures, the enterprising and spirited proprietors of this valuable part of our city domain. The ruins— if so the ashes of a block of framed buildings may be termed—are being rapidly cleared awoy. and already many of the former sites are occupied liy temporary tenements, filled with the goods rescued from the flames. But even more indicative than nil this of the undismayed spirit of enterprize, possessing energy and ability e<|ual to any emergency, which is so peculiarly characteristic of the citizens of ?an Francisco—we notice with pride and pleasure the almost magic appearance of some four or five house frames, erected on the burnt space, two of which are actually shingleil and sided up. We shall expect to find them co...

Bottom* Conine. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 December 1849

Sonoma Course. Race for $10,000. —We are indebted to a friend for an account of the race which came off on Thursday the 20th instant at the Sonoma Course between J. M. Hedspeth's bay horse Doctor and Andreas Pico's bay horse —. The race was for $5,000 a side, 600 yards, p.p. The Course was just outside the town on a level plot of ground, but, owing to the heavy rains, the track was very muddy and slippery. The day was very unpropitious a sharp rain having set in in the morning and continued during the race. Notwithstanding this, however, there were five or six hundred persons on the ground who exhibited much interest in the contest. There were very few bettors but what bets were made were heavy, and, though the Doctor was the favorite, no odds were given. Judges were appointed and took their respective stations, the track was cleared and the nags brought up to the "scratch." The word ''go" was given several times but it was "no go," the Pico horse baulking which caused a recall. Fin...

APPALLING AND DESTRUCTIVE CONFLAGRATION!! MM* OF PROPERTY F.X( KKDl<i «l,000,0001! [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 December 1849

APPALLING AND DESTRUCTIVE CONFLAGRATION!! LOSS OF PROPERTY EXCEEDING $l,000,000!! Our city has been visited by fire, and for the second time within the twelvemonth past are we called upon to record the disastrous career of conflagration. That we have dwelled in inexpressible fear of this calamity during the year which is nearly closed, we much confess, and that a dread of its terrible results we have, in conjunction with most of our citizens, entertained, should also be acknowledged. Averted by a power superhuman, through a succession of days and months, during which its occurrence would have entailed upon our city utter ruin, it came at last, and though ne'er again might an event of this nature take place under circumstances so especially favoring the escape of the city, we have to deplore the destruction of one of the finest and most flourishing portions of San Francisco. (new PP) The fire originated in Dennison's Exchange, and, it is said, in the second and upper story. At about ...
