A Michigan correspondent of the Country Gentleman writes: I have no- ticed in your paper several letters speak- ing favorably of a "corn sugar" manu- factory in Ogle County, Illinois. I am somewhat surprised that the letters have appeared without comment, leaving your readers to infer that the manufac- ture of starch sugar and sirup is a laud- able business enterprise. It first liegan to attiact general attention when the Gallagher boys sold the Camp-Bird mine to the St. Louis Smelting, Works company, in Jan- uary, for $250,000. It is said that there is ore enough in Leadville, to employ all the smelting works for three or four years, pro- vided no new discoveries are made in the meantime. The mines are now turning out from $20,000 to $30,000 worth of ore per day. A gentleman who has recently visited Leadville for the purpose of gather- ing statistics, estimates that ^from May to September, the best months in the year for mining opperations, the products will amount to $2,000,- 000 per month, and the products of the mines for 1S79, from present in- dications will be $15,000,000.
