The Evelyn Observer. Published Every Friday. FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1884. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 25 April 1884

ýCit @tbdta Wbseruer. Published Emory Friday. FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 184. Our reporter has gathered during his travels that a strong feeling of dissatisfaction is be. ing expressed in the Southern Riding of the Shire of Eltham at the tardy steps that are be ing evinced by the Council in forwarding the interests of this locality by initiating the neces sary p:o:eedings to avail them selves of the Government sub sidy towards building a bridge over the Yarra to connect this Shire and Bulleen. Our mem ber, Mr. Cameron, most cheer fully responded. The rate payers to a man are in favor of it. The Ministers interviewed were as definite in its favor as official etiquette would permit them. Then what is it, for sooth, that stops the way ? It can not be the members of this Council representing other rid ings. The Eastern Riding has recently received the boon now asked for by this riding, viz., a bridge across the Yarra on the Flats, besides several other minor bridges, and the North riding has had...

TREE PLANTING V. ROAD MENDING IN THE SHIRE OF LILYDALE. TO THUE EDITOR OF THI EVELYN OBBKEVfB Sla,-The Individual who writes "Note from Lllydale" is, to say the least, a character worthy of commiseration, inamuch as that a person of ordinary perception need not go out of his way to realise the fact that he must have either dust in his. eyes or bile on the brain. FEMALE PUGILISTS IN AMERICA. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 25 April 1884

FEMALE PUGILISTB IN AMERICA. From New York come the details of a pugilistic "entertainment" of a somewhat novel character. One Harry Hill, a "well known sporting man," was the "showman," and his show consisted of a set of female boxers. The chief feature of the entertain. meat wansa drawn match between Miss Bella Moore and'Misi Clara Smith, two dusky "heavy weights." At the rist lead ofl, we read, one of these ladies seized her "eppo. neat' back hair," upon which " Miss Smith hit Miss Moore plump on the nee." Then they tried to scratch, but, being gloved, their kindly intentions failed. When "blood was dnawn" the arsona s were separated. khen appeared two feather-weights-Misses Anna Brown and Fanny Wilson-both of whom, in the costume of pages of Louis XIV.1 time, "meant light from the Aitrt." Miss Wilson soon had the best of this en counter. In the first round she showeiel the blows on her friend till the latter was fain to cry out ; but for all that' Mi Brown' "was game, and toed t...

ANDERSON'S CREEK. March 24. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 2 May 1884

(eRnOei QUn ow. O()0R11ESPOYoDONT.) .March 24, A start has been made at the Evelyn Tunnel. Tenders have been accepted for. clearing the mouth of it. This is a ptirt of what I will safely predict will be a gigantic succestfu atliir. That this tunnel hnsnot been stilised before is a mystery. Its water power is saf ficient to drive ,ll the factories in Melbourne, Had we have had the railway through as to 4Iilydale I lave no doubt that long are this it would have been utilated, and this small township a thriving town, However, tithough I am not thoroughly conver sant of the ultimate use the company intend to apply the power, by what I hear it will give an ilmpetus to tlii placo which is sadly needed. Chatty and Party obtained 4ozr. 5ldwts, for 5 days' washing last week In their alluvial workings jz the flat near their dam.
