The IOU District. BULONG AND ITS MINES. No. I. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 16 December 1895

The IOU District. BULONG AND ITS MINES. (byour mining reporxee.) No. I. With the exception of Kalgoorlie itself, no district has of late attracted more attention from people on the goldfields and the mining community generally than Bulong— or, as it is more commonly canect, tne I u U. How it got this name even the oldest of its present inhabitants do not seem to be aware, nor does tlic title appear to have any particular significance ; suffice it that it is an IOU of the kind that even the most cautious money-lender would be eager enough to discount. Bulong — the original native name, and that by which the township is called' on the Government maps and plans — does not seem to have caught the fancy of the people, and as Kal goorlie is very often 'Hannans,' as Kanowna is invariably ' the Feather,' as Goongarra is always ' the Ninety,' so will Bulong, for a very long time, be knovrn almost entirely as the I O U. Fo; ming a part of the East Coolgardie goldiiekls, the IOU is situated ab...

KALGOORLIE MINER PUBLISHED DAILY. MONDAY, DEC. 16TH, 1895. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 16 December 1895

Kalgoorlie Miner. ? ' PUBLISHED DAILY. MONDAY, DEC. 16tii, 1895. The Municipal Council have now been established several months, but the work they have clone so far has been practi cally nil. Much requires to-' be accom plished in many directions, ? but the Council have had no revenue up to the present, and their energies hare been less occupied as a, Council than as a Board of Health. It is well that it has been so far the first consideration in a town such- as this should be the improve ment of its sanitary state. For this, purpose the Board were granted £-2000, a short time since by the Government, and the result has been that they have been enabled to effect alterations by ?which' the Health Officer was recently in a position to give the town a clean bill ::f health. The Board have worked economically, and there is- still a con siderable portion of the vote ?unexpended, and the question that the local author ities have now to consider is how the balance may be employed to the be...

New Find on the I O U Road, Some excitement was occasioned in Kalgoorlie on Saturday, by reports which were in circulation of a new rush about fourteen miles from Han nans, close to the I O U road. Mr Ross, the prospector who was said to^ have made the discovery, conducted a party out on Sunday to look at the country. Among those who went out were Messrs A. Monck, P. Murrie, T. O. Hall, W. J. McDonough, S. Wake, and representatives of the Press. After 1 long aud dusty drive, the party turned off the I O U road at a point not far distant from Heauen's Letter Box, and made a detour to the right into the bush. Passing some \ery nice country with large ironstone patche3, the travellers were conducted to Mr RossY claim. The property consists of ten twenty-four acre blocks. On one of these is a very large blow, the forma tion consisting of white quartz rubble, highly mineralized. On breaking the stone on the surface, fine gold was to be seen. THE FIGHTING IN ABYSSINIA. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 16 December 1895

THE FIGHTING IN ABYSSINIA. Details have been received of the heroic defence made by the Italian force, under Major Tesseli, against an army of 22,000 Shoas. An Abyssinian regiuient qf infantry, numbering ?G0, and a battery of aviiller-y comprised the Italian foroe. For seven hours this body of men fought the army of the Shoas.
