Correspondence. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 2 October 1909

Correspondence. TO THE IvDlTOR. Sir, — After reading J. W. Inman's letter which appeared in your last issue I went over to the park to see poor old Ivocus Standi, calculating that I should find him in his old haunt, under the band stand. He was at home sure enough, with a tem perature of 110, no boots or socks on, a dirty tongue, and complaining that everything he ate went to his stomach. He also had a shear blade in his hand, and at intervals he would attack a bag filled with straw with the same sava.ee ferocitv which a Katoomba tout-displays towards an unwary visitor. Upon inquiring of him if this was a new form of calisthenics he informed me that he was stabbing Billy Inman 'in the dark,' and al though he had ruined three blades had utterly failed to get one in on that portion of his anatomy. You have my assurance, sir, that Inman's script had left L,ocus completely bereft of Standi, in fact his condition, in addition to the above alarming S3'mptoms, was alcoholic, and his remark...

Welcome Home to Rev. J. F. Russell. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 2 October 1909

Welcome Home to Rev. J. F. Russell. The Masonic Hall presented an exceedingly at tractive appearance on Thursday evening' when .ladies and gentlemen to the number of over 250 assembled to bid a glad welcome home to the Rector of S. Hilda's Church, Katoomba. Parish ioners of all denominations were present, to show their friendship and good feeling for the Rev. gentleman. Looking down from the stage of the Hall on that large and friendly gathering it was ?easy to understand how deep in the hearts ot the people was the Rev. Mr. Russell. Everyone seemed anxious to once more grasp the hand which, only a few weeks ago, seemed to have passed beyond their grasp forever in this life, and the feeling of thankfulness for his recovery and return to the hearts of his friends was as sincere as it was deep and lasting. The ladies had decor ated the hall for the occasion as only ladies know how to decorate to win the heart and charm the eye of the beholder. J. H. Bloome, Esq., of I/eura, was the Ch...

Lesley's Luck. CHAPTER I. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 2 October 1909

Lesley's Luck. CHAPTER I. **It's iniquitous — to have left you with out any provision ! I always understood that Mr. Cartaret intended to leave you the estate.' .'So did I,' said Lesley Dunbar, rather wearily ; ' But as he hasn't, what is the use of talking about it, dear Mr. L,awson ? The matter is quite clear. Everything goes to Mr. Richard Cartaret uncondition ally.' Yes — by a will dated nearly ten years ago. I am morally certain that your uncle made a later will — though I never drew one up for him ; hut he was very indepen dent in such matters, and I always felt certain he had made one himself. But—' ' He didn't. Don't say anything more about it. He was always very good to me ? — more than good ; and after all he was only my step-uncle. So that is quite right, everything should go to Mr. Car taret. I— I shall be sorry .....to leave his dear old place.' The lawyer was silent. The girl who had been sitting opposite him at the round, mahogany table, got up and walked to the windo...

Photographing Private Property. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 2 October 1909

Photographing Private Property. . There seems to be a prevailing idea amongst a large number of residents of Katoomba, and other towns along the line, that if a photographer takes a good picture of their place, by purchasing a proof of the photo they have a perfect right to use it. bucli is decidely not the case. A photo grapher who spends his time, skill and . money to secure a photo of any given pro perty, does so because it is of value to him in his business and he at once copyrights the picture. To use it therefore without the consent of the photographer is a violation of the copyright law, and punished by heavy fines. There. has been so much, of this sort of thing done that a photographer to protect himself has recourse to the Copy right Act and thus secures to himself anjr profit which may result from the sale, of the photo or postcards of the place or places. There are numbers of boarding houses in this and other places who buy a print from the negative and then send it to Sy...

Katoomba Rifle Club Cup Competition. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 2 October 1909

Katoomba Rifle Club Cup Competition. Never in the history of Australia has a cup been competed for with a history and historic interest more interesting- and valu able than the one which has been presented by Mr. A. L. Peacock, of the Hotel Car rington, and which will be shot for at the Katoomba Ranee on the 15th November. The illustration herewith gives but a faint conception of the beauty and magnificence of the carvings. The Cup was originally the property of Mr. D. F. Thorubury, who won it at Wimbledon in 1868, for the high est individual aggregate score. The trophy is of solid silver, richly carved and em bossed, and weighs 170 ounces. It was bought by Mr. Peacock at a sale in 1905, when the Curator of Intestate Estates sold the property of Mr. Thornbury, then de ceased. At the same sale were sold many very choice oil paintings, portraits of Mr. D. F. Thornbury 's parents and relations, together with a rare collection of plated ? ware, books, bronzes, figures in alabaster, jewe...
