GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 5 January 1877

GENERAL NEWS. Sir Julinu Vogel, on his arrival from Now Zealand, was interviewed by a Sen Fulancisco reporter. He said that if colonial Governments negotiated for the American subeidy it would probably have been seeured, but the contractor insisted on receiving it. THE POLITICAL SITUATION. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 5 January 1877

THE POLITICAL SITUATION. Teas Melbourne press seems con sideraldy exercised as to the political platfcrm to be submitted to the country at the general election. The %linitry stands pledged to a land tax, an iicomo tax and the revision of the tariioin the direction of free trade. All are agreed that additional taxation is n-o cessary, the incidence will be the point at issue. The Liberal party declare that in iustice to the country the large esta:e holders should pay in propor tion to their wealth. Hitherto it is affirmed that the land monopolists in the colony have escaped their just share in the general scheme of tax ation, and if this be so there is strong reason why in any new legislation the national burden should be a ppetdo tse race. There is nothing wrong in this; it is only carrying out in practice the theory laid down by esnch authorities as ADAM Sctra and JonH STEwAcT MILL. Why should the poorer classes in this colony be made, through the Customs, to bear the great weight ...

EXPLORATION OF NEW GUINEA. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 5 January 1877

;EXPLORATION OF NEW . GUINEA. -n a telegram from Sydney in the Argus of the lete .we have as follows :--Mr. Goldie, who has been exploring in New Guinea, has returned to Sydney with an interesting collection of botanical and zoological specimens. He 'started from Port Moresby, but went no further than 20 miles inland. He saw a splendid grazing country, with many grasses identi cal with those found in Australia, well watered with numerous small rivers, and d'otted with stunted eucalyptus. Tiis was found to be the general character of the coast district, beyond which a mountain range was seen to riso far inland. Here and there was seen villages strroundod by extensive plains, on which the natives had. large oocoanut and banana plantations in cultivation. Mr. Goldie is opposed to ex ploring in large parties, as it arouses the auspicion of the natjves. The obstacles throughout are the h)ostility of the natives and the deadliness of the climate.

RIGOLLOT'S MUSTARD LEAVES. 32 lenrielta street, London. In oar last report of the Academy of Medicine, we said we would refer apain to the account presented by M. BIonohardat on behalf of hi. Itigollot, about a new form of sinapism. On reading aoid observations, our readers will certainly find that we have been right in pubhshing them is e.rtenso, because it is seldom that pharmacology gains such happy improvements as those described in M. itigollot's note. The effect of said im provement will not only be to make in every respect easier and mere efflicclous the ap phcation of shmuplms, but. this advantage will carry along with it another very impor tant one to wit: the extension of tile repulsive tnedication, a very powerful means in a great numher of afiletions where {pain is the predominatintg symptom, and witch very often is not made use of on account of the loathesomcncss unavoidable in the com mon way of applying einapismns.
