ARRIVAL OF THE NORTHAM, WITH THE JUNE ENGLISH MAILS [PER GREVILLE AND BIRD, REUTER'S AGENTS.] [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 12 August 1864

ARRIVAL OF THE NORTHAM, WITH THE JUNE. ENGLISH MAILS (By Electric Telegraph.) [PER GREVIL.E AID BImRD, RETER'S AGENTS. [The following telegraphic despatch was published on Wednesday, and circulated through the Borough of Heathcote.] TDIES OFFICE, TWednesday, 1 o'clock, y.m. London, 27th June. - The Prince of Wales has given his first state Ball. Large and influential depntations from the Australian Colonies have waited on the Colonial Secretary, protesting against trans portation to the Australian Colonies. The Secretary declined to give any assurance sought by the deputation. The attention of the British public is ab sorbed in the Dano-German question. The London conference seperated without any successful result. The general feeling in England is for peace, but its attitude is bold; that of Germany is insulting; France and Russia give no sign. Resolutions condemnatory of the "Essays and Reviews" have been carried in both Houses of Parliament. - P20,000 have been voted to Sir Rowla...

THE MUSIC LECTURE. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 12 August 1864

THE MUSIC LECTURE. Mr. Alsop's lecture on Wednesday night was a great success. The attendance, con sidering the state of the weather, was de cidedly good; about eighty or ninety persons we believe were present. The lecturer reviewed the science of music from the present day till it is lost in the- .twilight or darkiness of antiquity; he traced back instrumental music beyond the deluge,.and vocal music to our common parents, Adam and Eve, who, the lecturer assured his audience, used to sing duets of praise to their Creator. The lecture: han died his subject with great ability-he is an enthusiast in music; he assured his audi dice that there is music in everything, even in a groan, or the wailing cry of. a puny child. We cannot go this far with the lecturei, for if we concede this, the shrill teeth-jarring sound of sharpening a saw, or the noise of a. coffee mill must be. classed. as music! We believe everyone present was highly pleased with the efforts of the lecturer, and the ladies...
