The Riverine Herald ECHUCA, WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 29, 1869. [Newspaper Article] — Riverine Herald — 29 September 1869

ECHUCA, WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 29, 1869. The news by the mail of the state of the London wool market is of a cheering char acter, an average advance having been ob tained at the August sales of a penny on Australian wools. We observe by the bye it is stated in one of the latest telegrams that monthly Bales are advocated by buyers. We are not aware that any satisfactory reason hae been given for the holding of only four sales of wool in London during the year. The only explanation we have heard given is that it is the custom. The customs of mer cantile men are not, we should imagine, irre versible. The practice of the ancient Medes and Persians of making their laws unalterable has long been condemned, and as we advance in enlightenment and civilization we find it to ;be a folly of the most -culpable description to cling to certain rules and forms merely be cause of their .antiquity. The absurdity of iadhering to matters of old usage is shewn in 'the story of the farmer who was in the habit...

THE BISHOP OF MELBOURNE'S LECTURE. [Newspaper Article] — Riverine Herald — 2 October 1869

THE BISHOP. OF MELBOURNE'S LECTURE. "" '_ '1" 'V l ': Owing no doubt to the unpropitious state of the weather, there was not so large an attend ance as might have been expected at Christ Church on Wednesday evening, on the oc casion of the delivery of his lecture by the Bishop of Melbourne. There can be little doubt, we think, that this was the principal cause of the absence of very many persons, since a large number of tickets were disposed of, and the lecture had generally been looked forward to, as we understood, with much in terest. The chair was taken by Mr James M'Culloch, who, after the Rev Mr M'Causlarid bad opened the proceedings with prayer, in troduced the Right Rev lecturer with a few prefatory remarks. The Bishop then rose and said that he had been requested during his brief sojourn in this place to deliver a lecture, and that he had ! fixed on a subject, on which he afterwards remembered lie had already lectured in Echuca. He would therefore now read that portion of th...

A very large num ber of grown up persons as well as of chil dren from both towns assembled at an early hour in the afternoon. The school-house was very tastefully decorated with evergreens and flowers, and numerous appropriate mottoes and devices were displayed on the walls. The tea, which was of a sumptuous descrip tion, was laid on the tables a little before five o'clock, and a numerous happy-looking party sat down to partake of the good things pro-: vided. The ornamentation of the tables was very tasteful, and the whole appearance of the place was most creditable to the ladies by whom the arrangements were made. These were Mrs Leonard, Mrs Tupholme, Mrs Devonald, Mrs Air, Miss Air, a.nd Miss Gilmore, who also presided on the occasion. At the conclusion of the repast the tables were removed, and prepara...
