Wonnue. December 19. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 16 December 1898

Wonnue. December 12. It is now some months ago since I have written, but what with the crop failures and other disasters, all spirits have left us for anything. It is stale, therefore, to say the season is bad, for all know it only too well. The crops along our frontages I don't think will average more than two bags to the acre, and many of them hardly that. First the drought and then the high winds have done considerable damage to them. I have just received a prospectus of the Farmers' and Settlers' Co-Operative Co., and from it, it would seem that to do business with them would necessitate sending our produce to Sydney, which few around here would care to risk. Most of us prefer selling our grain at the nearest market. Although things are bad around here, from all accounts they are worse with you. We have some grass and water for our stock, in full abundance so far, but the country must be a regular Sahara on your plains. I hope what you are advocating regarding the remission of t...

Urana. December 22. The weather still continues dry and there are no signs of rain. I am afraid we will not have very pleasant holidays during the next two weeks as we have not even sufll cierit water to mix with our beverage. The new Presbyterian Church, Urana, was opened on Monday, the 18th December. Opening services wero conducted by the Rev. J. A social in connection with the opening of tho Church was held on Monday evening in the School of Arts and was a great success, The Rev. M. Bell presided, and said how pleased he. felt nt having a church in Urana. Many people thought a hall or School of Arts was quite sufficient, but he differed from them and thought that a Christum people should not rest satisfied until they had a church, a place set apart for the worship of God.
