OPEN COLUMN. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 25 March 1899

OPEN COLUMN, We do not necessarily identify ourselves with the opinions expressed by our correspondents Sib, — WiU you kiodly give the folio wiug lined publication in justice to all those who. are weary and desire rest. I, unfortunately , am troubled that way, and would much like some of the good thingB of this weary world, and of which sleep if* one of the best. But no such luck, Mr. E litor, oh no ! we are put on this earth to suffer, if not bodily, ment ally. After tossing about on your b^d until -ibout time to get up, when you are juit about to close your weary eyes, you are gently reminded that your neighbour haw forgotten to muzzle his dogs by unearthly yells under -our bedroom window, not done intentionally, but juit to let you know that, in ypire of 2/6 for tht-ir scalp, and compulsory muzziiiig, there are still a few alive. I think Sic. Editor, the time has arrived when every dog should be muzzled, and I would also -u/gest tLat the old gent living iu High street be muzzled ...

A BIG TREE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 25 March 1899

^ BIG TREE, We have to record the downfall of one of the remnants of the great inon archs of our local forests that have fallen under the axe of civilisation— a similar fate to that which laid out the late lamented King Butigaree, a former proprietor of this' timber. Time was when trees of the type that we are giving a description of were plentiful in this district, but very few at present remain, lfte dcrunet tree was a member of the eucalyptus family and grew on the creek flat in Belle vue East, the property of P. G. King, M. L.C. It was felled and worked up by a Norwegian named W. Vincent, who has been in the employ of Garner Turner and Co. for many years. The reason why this tree was not worked up previously was the difficulty in fellin« and in working the tree after being felled, the girth three feet from the ground oeing 27fb 9in. Vincent reduced this diticulty by erecting a stage about 12ft from the ground, where the girth was considerably lessened and the barrel more uniform...

' Si Patrick's Day Celebrations , ? : ? ? ? CONCERT & BALL IN AID' OF R. C. CHURCH FUND. A splendid evening's amusement was provided on Friday last, 1/th instant, when a concert was held in O'Donnell's ' hall i'tx aid of the building fund of St. Joseph's church, convent, and school. The attendance was . very good, all parts of the hall being fairly filled; and, notwithstanding the short time thai. ; had elapsed since the entertain ment was first decided upon, it was m every way a total a handsome amount,' and the en joyment of the audience was evident right through the programme. The items contributed by the pupils of the Convent school were well worth iiear in » and reflected much credit upon the aptitude of the pupils as well as upon the sisters who, it was apparent, had taken very great pains to efficiently train them. A terrible disastei occurred in the English Channel on Thursday of last week, the steamer Stella, with 210 ex cursionists on board, being1 wrecked near Alderney. All the wotr.en and children were saved in the boats first lowered from the Stella The inrushing seas caused the Stella's boilers to explode, and the steamer foundered in deep water, with 50 persons still on board. All the boats which left the Stella were picked up by pass ing steamers, but 80 persons were missing at latest accounts. There were many instances of astonishing calmness and j heroism on board the Stella. The last, boai to leave the side4 of the Stella capsized, but was eventually right+.d by 14 ? persons who succeeded in clinging to her keel.
