GRANYA. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 2 September 1887

GRANYA. * ---- (FiROMi 005r OWN cORunhESnONDENT.) Mining matters still retmain dull. In thle Oranya Conpany's anine, the tri butors ate raising stone, and will start crushing during the week. A number of co-operacive Ipartios have crushed during the month, but, with one or two oexcep tions, the returns were unsatisfactory. This is to ehu regretted, as ther are n o v. maniy roofs wrth a trial inl the noighbor hood, which will now be loft untried. The minors lately employed in the Grauya COmpany's mine are nnturally incensod at being defrauded of their wages. The total sum owing to themn is nearly £i300-ratlher a large sum for work ing men to lose. As already reported, they have obtained vrdlicts in the Police Court, with "inmmediate execution;" but as the company is soi, cut there is nothing to execute upon. Full particulars have been forwarded to tlh MliningDopartmeont by the A.M.A., the information being supplied by the local branch. It is a question whether the wages can be re cov...

THE CHILTERN ART-UNION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SENTINEL. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 2 September 1887

THE CIIIi TERN ART-UNION. TO TIIC EDITOR OF TIIE SENTINIL. SIo,-Snmo months back I received through the post a book of tickets for a drawing of prizes at Clhiltern, although' I neither wanted nor nasked for them. After one or two postponemeonts, tko drawing-no I am told-took place about a fortnight ago. Singular to say, how ever, no mention is made of the fact in either your columns or those of your Chiltern cnntemporary. The only infor 'nation to hand in Wodonga is that one poerson, who is known as the henchman of the promoter of the art union, in the fortunato holder of one winning tic.e:t, which has gaitned for him a home. Con sidering that books of tickets were issued indiscriminately to people in Wodonga and district, the least the promoter can do, unleasale despises pulic confidenlco altogether, is to advertise the result. It is time at any rate that the subscribers k1now something about this latest specu. latiin into which they hiave entered, anld which at present aoomar enve...

TALLANGATTA POLICE COUR'. -4- FRmiDA, 26th AUocSr. (Before Mr W. H. Foster, P?.M.) LAROENY. . W . Lfeovre was charged with fe loniously stealing nine shoots of bark, the property of William Brown. Mr J. Wilkinson, of Albury, appeared for the prisoner. The na.used and a brother-in law, named Miller, took a contract to erect a part of a dividing fence between the properties of Messrs Mlinogue and Brown, at Sandy Creek. Lefevro and. Miller obtained the timber from the pro. porties on both sides of the fence, and carefully stripped some of the trees cut down for timber for the fence of their bark. liller afterwards collected the bark and stacked it in a heap. Brown discovered the bark had been removed, and reported the matter to the police at Kieow. In company with them Brown visited Lefevro's house, and gave Lofevro in charge for stealing the bark. Wodonga & Towong Sentinel. Awake ! Arise! Or be for ever fallen ! MILTON.—FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1887. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 2 September 1887

Awake I Arise I Or be for ever Tallen i MMucTos. FIIIDAY1 SEPTEMBER 2, 1887. Tir agitation in the coloniec against the"yellow agony"-as Californians have metaphorically and poetically dubbed the "influx of Chinese-is iln creasing year.by. year. . We. hlave for some time had an Anti-Chinese League at Clharters Towers, Queensland, whose members refuse any longer to munch the succulent celery reared by alien hands, and swear to spurn the traitorous cabbage vwhich has flourished under the auspices of the "ahlmond eyed." Now we have the market gardeners of Moorabbin, near IMel bourne, in arms against the seemingly inoffensive inmigrant with thel child like and bland smile. These gentlemen have found that, if the present state of atffairs goes on, their occupation, as in the case of OTIesILO, will be gone; for Joux is actually going to the landlord as each European tenant's lease runs out, and offering a higher rent than that previously paid-a bait which apparently takes thoroughly, the l...
