RE THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN GRENFELL. (To the Editor, of the Grenfell Record.) [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 3 May 1879

RE THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN GRENFELL. (To the Editor of the Grenfell liecord.) Deak Sir,— Somo time ago, complaints wore made about the scarcity of magistrates here, and the consequence was, that a fresh Joi wore gazetted, and ' duly sworn' in: Since bein--- sworn in, most of them ([ presume being under the impression that they had then fulfilled their duty) have jeen but onco on the bench. A magistrate's appointment is purely an honorary one, and, as a matter of course, his, duties are the same. If he accepts his appointment. surely ho ought to attend at tho Police and Smnll Di'bts .Court, and more than that, he should attend at the proper time, 10 o'clock in tho morning on court-days. Summonses and subpoenas are made returnable at 10 o'clock, and _ it seems to me. a most absurd thing that magistrates should quietly walk up to the Court-house at half-past twelve, keeping suitors, thoir witnesses, and counsel, quietly cooling their heels thore for over two hours ; but, such ...

THE GRENFELL BENCH. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 3 May 1879

THE GRENFELL BENOH.\ Id hoped that the recent additions., made [ local Bjnch would have spared us tlie' Ity of having again to call attention to bonvenience and loss of time experienced [)se having business at the Grenfell Court 1 through the non-attendance, and want of liality of the magistrates. Summonses libpcenas require all parties in a case to be Indance at ten o'clock precisely, that being lour fixed for the opening of the Court, It that time business should, in conso le begin. Such, however, is seldom, if ?the case; in fact, as a 'rule, the Courtis lened before olevon, and occasionally, as ?10 case on Monday lasb, not before twelve, Iven half-past twelve, as on Tuesday. On Itter day, several parties, who had in obe ja to summons, travelled a dislanco of I miles, \fcvi punctually in attendance. I was also a witness (an invalid) who, from hpearance, should have been in bod, instead arily lounging about for hours on such an hont day. There were others who had ?compelled to leav...
