OUR OMEO LETTER. Friday, August 4. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 8 August 1882

OUR OIEO LETFER. (FROM OUR OWN CORIESPONDENT.) Friday, August 4. At the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. Ounningham and Easton, Js.P., Arthur £1. Pyle was brought up under warrant charged with having deserted his wife. Mrs. Pyle said defendaut was her lawful husband, and had left her without adequate means of support. She was unable to produce her marriage certi icate, as iMr. Thos. Pyle, her husband's father, had it in his possession and re fused to give them up. The bench said an atOdavit that she was married to Pyle would suffice. They would remand the case until the 10th inst., admitting the defendant to bail. To nhew what curious mistakes ars sometimes made by the printer, I send the following taken from a contemporary at an inquest on the body of a China man :-" Constable Slatten deposed : I examined the body, but found no indica tions that led me to believe he had met with foul play. I should say he was about 40 years of age. I searched the body, and the concert and bal...

In such a severe climate as ours, where frequent falls of snow occur during the winter, all stockowners should keep a supply of hay for emer gencies. THE LICENSING VOTE. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 8 August 1882

THE LICENSING VOTE. From a number of letters on the above subject we publish the following : Sir,-Your remarks a few days ago re the duties of voters at the municipal elections to take place on the 10th inst.' in relation to the Licensing Act were very appropriate and timely so far as they went, but, sir, I think that without going beyond the scope of a journalist, you could very fairly hsve advised voters what they should do on the occasion. I have no desire, nor do I presume, to give you advice on such a matter, but will simply state my own convictions and the opinions I gather fronm those I come in contact with. As is well known, North Gippsland, and in particular Bairnsdale, Bruthen, the Tambo, Buchan and the Snowy River have ad vanced greatly within the last three years, and who shall say what progress they may make within the next three years, when an annual vote will be taken as to whether or not there may he an in crease in the number of publichouses at the end of the three ...
