THE RING THAT BINDS TWO HEARTS. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 20 December 1924

TIHE RING THAT BINDS TWO -1HEAT'J'S. Many lovers have a fancy for giv ing as an engagement-ring a band in which the birthstone of one's fiance appears. The engagement-ring of Queen Alexandria spelled the pet name of King Edward-then Prince of Wales. The first stone was a beryl, the second an emerald, the: third a ruby, the fourth a topaz, the fifth a jacinth (the j stood for an i), and the sixth an emerald, the ini tial letters of the stones spelling the word "Bertie." lHere is a list of stones dedicated to the different months, for which I am frequently asked: To January, is dedicated the garnet; February, the amethyst; March, the bloodstone; Ap ril, the diamond; May, the emerald; June, the agate; July, the ruby; Aug ust, the moonstone; September, the sapphire; October, the opal; Novem ber, the topaz; and December, the turquoise. The ruby is said to be symbolical of courage, the diamond of loyalty, the sapphire of purity, the erner .ld of health, the topaz of prosperity. the turquo...

HAEMORRHOIDS OR PILES. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 20 December 1924

I.AENfORRIIOIDS O1 PILES. This very prevalent trouble con. sists of dilated veins at the lower ex tremity of the intestinal canal. The haemnorrholdal veins carry up the blood to the liver. Hence derange ment of that organ, or any undue pressure on it--as by tight stays will cause the trouble. But the moot universal source of the trouble is coi stlpation. If you, early in life, learn to attenur to this imperative duty, you will nev er be troubled with haeniorrhoids. unless, of course, you flagrantly break natural laws in some othner similar respect. And here, most conspicu ously of all bodily ailments, preven tion is best. When the trouble ha': once begun, you seldom get rid of it entirely : Even a surgical operation often fails to eradicate it in toto, Always the affliction is a very ua pleasant disability. But it' may bhe far worse when two conditions are grafted upon it-inflammation or too severe haemorrhage. With infilam mation there is great pain. The first thing to be done is, ...

HEALTH IN THE HOME. PREMATURE BALDNESS. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 20 December 1924

]HEALTH IN THAE HOME, PRBEMATU'IN BALDNESS, As we get old, most of us have a tendency, more or less pronounced, to a thinning of our hair, often amounting to its total disappearance over a part at least of the scalp, But baldness does not always wait for old age, at times showing itself In quite young people. In these cases of genuine prematupe baldness the cause is by no mians clear. It is thought to be ca.sed by the activity of germs, but even this is by no means certain. What is certain is that it is not due to over-development or too active a use of the brain, or to the wearing of tight hats; causes which popular credulity often assign to It. When it is noticed that the hair is getting thin it is wise to take certal?t steps at once. The head should h shampooed once a fortnight, and a equal mixture of parafin and olive oil should be then rubbed into the scalp and the head gently washed with soap and water at the end of twelve hours. Then ,every night un. til the next shampoo and ...

HOME GARDENING. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 20 December 1924

HOME GARDENING, By "Heather Jock." After the wet spring which weq have experienced most of the soils around this district have a distinct tendency to harden and crack. If such conditions are allowed to remain,, then an enormous quantity of soil moisture will be lost to the atmo. sphere. In order to prevent this the beds should get a good drenching with the hose; then the following day take. the Nordc cross hoe and till the sur. face to a nice fine tilth about one and a half inches deep. From time to time after a proper soaking repeat this same operation. This will save, too, the use of your plants hundreds of gallons of water a year. It does more-it prevents the soil becoming overheated to damage the roots of shallow rooting plants; it also pre~ vents sudden changes in the soil temperature, which is also detrimen tal to good results, and it allows of.. a free circulation of air in the sur face soil,. which is essential to the plant and ever so much more essen tial to the soil organi...

HUME AND HOVELL [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 20 December 1924

HUME AND HOVELL At the time about when this issue is going to press two very interesting functions are event- uating at St. Albans and Deer Park, being the formal unveilings of the monuments erected at these places to the memory of Hume and Hovell who this week 100 years ago consummated their overland trip of exploration through Victoria to the seaboard. Nothing can detract from the de- serving honor now being justly accorded these heroes. There are, of course, many other de- serving heroes, thousands born to blush unseen who wasted their fragrance upon the desert air, our deserving forefathers, who performed miraculous pioneering   feats in the early days and have died unwept and unsung. Hume and Hovell, however, seem to have put up a spectacular deed that has captured the public sentiment and has been awarded a somewhat belated recognition. Some of the 37 monuments erected have indeed been labors of love. That erected at Back Creek School, near Yackand- andah, deserve...

HEALTH IN THE HOME. THE IMPORTANT PERIOD OF A MAN'S LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 10 January 1925

HEALTH IN THE HOME; THE IMPORTANT PERJOD OF A MAN'S LIFE. From the age of forty to. that of sixty a man, who properly regulates himself, may be considered in the prime of life. Ills mature strength of constitution renders him almost impervious to the highest attacks of disease, and all the functions are in order. Having gone a year or two past sixty, however, he arrives at the critical point of his existence. The river of death flows before him, and he remains at a standstill. But athwart this river is a viaduct called the "Turn of Life," which, if turned In safety, lenids to the valley of "Ol Age," around which the river winds" and then flows without a doubt of causeway to affect its passage. Tho bridge is, however, constructed of fragile materials, and it depends up on how it is trodden whether it bend or break. Gout, apoplexy, and other maladies are also in the vicinity to waylay the traveller and thrust him from (.he pass; but let him gird up his loins and provide himself with p...

EAT MORE FRUIT [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 10 January 1925

EAT MORE FRUIT The couplets which are placed on the Flinders street railway buildings are put there with the intention of ad vising people to eat more fruit. Al though some folk may smile at the words us nI, it cannot be denied that they have some influence in the di rection i.ntended. There is a feeling that if more fruit were eaten the whole production could be consumed in the Commonwealth, and what that means for the fruitgrowers does not require much explanation. A few days ago at a luncheon held by the Australian Dricd Fruits Association the matter was discussed, and various suggestions were made as to the bene fit of eating more fruit and bring ing its price down to a reasonable level. The luncheon was intended to illustrate the truth of the words, "That which makes us have no need of physic, that is physic indeed." There were several speakers, and each gave hints as to what might be done towards eating more fruit. These speakers represented the Australian Natives' Association...
