ANOTHER WOOL BARGE SUNK IN THE DARLING. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 23 October 1896

ANOTHER WOOL BARGE SUNK IN THE DARLING. 'Another barge with a valuable cargo of wool was snagged and sunk in the Darl ing last Saturday. Itappears from infor mation to hand that the steamer, Lady of the Luker o.i her way from Wiicaimia to South Australia, was near Kapana, about: !$■ from the Darling Hotel, when her barge struck a snag and went down. It is I reported that some 350 bales of wool are : damaged, the ha'anee being removed to the bank by the aid of a wineh. This vessel is also in Mi"sr&. Rich and Co.'s fleer, and is the third vessel snagged in the Darling this season. With the twe in the other rivers* one of which was also of the above fleet, onr snaggy water ways are responsible for a very consider uble amount of duiaage and loss.—•* Fed- 1 j end Standard."

The Pioneer. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23. 1896. GAWLER PLAINS IRRIGATION SCHEME. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 23 October 1896

Fill DAY, OCTOIiKll 23. 1896. GAWLKlt PLAINS Il;BIGATION SCHEME. An irrigation scheme that may claim to he a rival of Ren mark has been proposed for the Gawler Plaityn, lying between the towns of Gawler and Salisbury. A brief comparison, between the proposal, as put forward by the pro moters, and the present conditions of the settlement, may be deemed worthy of consideration, A private company proposes to expend £400,000 in irri gating the area named, to channel and grade the land into blocks of from five to ten acres and it was calculated that cost of land to the prospective settlers would not be more than £12 per acre. The maximum cost of the water for irrigation was also estimated at l£d. per 1000 gallons. Now we will take the cost of Benmark land at £20 per acre and the water rate at 20/ per acre per annum, and see how this expendi ture compares with that proposed for the Gawler Plains Scheme. Renmark land for this, 20/ rate per acre, can have twenty four inches of water per ann...

1*0 Ok M E ¥ S. f . ... U- I Tlie highest shade temperature re- j gisfcered this week was yesterday, when , the thermometer reached 98 degrees. | Shearing has been completed at Cobdogla Station and the result is the poorest clip the manager says be has ever kDown. The crows are likely to be very troublesome as the fruit ripens, no steps having been taken to suppress them during the breeding season. The drought still continues in the North and throughout Riverina. A few slight thunder showers have beeu reported, but not enough to do any appreciable good. Both the Murray and the Darling are falling at all stations, except at Wahgunyah, where there is a ris* of thirteen inches since yesterday week. It is likely that navigation will be stopped before Christmas, or at any rate soon after. The Billiard Boom of Mr. J. Tonkin is just upon finished and will probably be out of the contractor's bands to morrow. Two very fair'tables have been put up and if Mr. Tonkin bis permit by the mail in t...

DAMMING RAL RAL CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 23 October 1896

DAMMING KAL EA.L CREEK. The Trust has made a wise decision in giving instruc tions to their engineer, Mr. F. W. Godfrey, to take levels and prepare esti mates for damming Ral Eal Creek. It is considered that if this work can be inexpensively carried out it will practically do away with No. 1 Pump, and so save the Irrigation Trust from J6500 to £1000 a year, according to the season, which that pumping station how costs the settlement. This creek is an anabranch of the river, saving in round figures about 26 miles of the uiain stream. If the fall of the Mur ray is taken at say three inches per mile, bringing the water down through a short cut, like Eal Eal Creek, to a dam at the mouth should give a suffi cient head of water to supply the Eas-ervnir when the main strea a is tco low for the water to flow, in. . This would be 11. great, boon to Beumtirk, as it would reduce considerably the cost of pumping ami consequently rende" a less rate per acre sufficient for all purposes. W«, in co...

A WILD DRIVE IN IRELAND. [From Temple Bar.] [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 23 October 1896

A WILD DRIVE IN IRELAND. [From Temple Bar,] ■ • :-Some< of you must surely know Tereuce O'Callaghan, and those of you that do will agree with me that we could better spare "a*better man, as the saying is, and join in hoping that his Shadow may never grow less. Good natured, in every sense of the word, humorous, jovial, and hospitable, he realises the achievement in which so many of his compatriots fail, of being as good a fellow as he seems. His generosity is proverbial; and if he is open to the imputation of occasional reluctance to' meet the just demands of his creditors, he atones for it by an equal readiness to share his money, when he is in funds, with any friend who may be in need of it. It was only the other day that I heard of a double-barrelled incident which comi eally illustrates both sides of his cha racter in this respect. A friend of mine, Dawson by name, having learnt that Terence had landed a clear £300 over an outsider, thought it would be a good opportun...
