The Tick Plague. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 July 1896

The Tick Plague. TO THE EDITOR '8. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — ' A deputation, including Mr. J. J. Roberts, stock and station inspector for the Bank of New South Wales, waited on the Colonial Secretary last Friday ' (says the ' Queenslander ' of June 20th), ' the motive being to allow cattle to travel south from north of the 21st parallel. No one can blame them in so doing.' As I consider it is the duty now of every man who has had experience with the much-vexed and formidable little tick, I now crave space in your valuable journal to publish the follow ing facts : — Mr. Roberts gave in his evidence that in the year 1894 a mob of bullocks from Stirling, number ing 1742 head, travelled to Baramie, on the Goulburn, close to Mus wellbrook, a distance of 1850 miles,' during which time Mr. Roberts says 14 died, Mr. Roberts' contention being that having been inoculated against pleuro they were proof against the tick. I have no doubt Mr. Roberts may think his version correct, and many more ...

Diseases in Stock Bill [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 July 1896

Diseases in Stock Bill The Diseases in Stock Bill has been put through tlu- Queensland Legislative As sembly in amendments, and goes to the Legislative Council in the usual form for further consideration. It is ?wrVkCkn o man an r**.^ C\T hhft Iri nn ic before Parliament that the value of a reviewing chamber becomes apparent. We have no intention of saying hard things about the Bill since the Assembly has taken most of the poison out! of it, but. it still contains provi sions which arc not in accord with .the best interests of the. stock-owners in Queensland. We propose to refer briefly to the various points of the progress of the measure through the Assembly. The first provision of the Bill was to provide for the appoint ment of a Board of Stock Commis sioners. Mr. Tozer, who was in charge of the measure, was specially cautioned to be careful in the constitu tion of the board. It ia probable that he will be, and stock-ownera, and especially southern stock - owners, should have a me...

Grain, &c. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 July 1896

Grain, &c. Hill, Clark and Co. report— The chief feature of interest in thia market during the past week has been the sharp fall in the various lines of fodder. Ploughing having been finished in the country districts, farmers have turned their attention to getting their stacks of fodder in to market before the spring, the result being that quite a surprising amount of produce has been available for the daily auctions at Redfern. Shipments from the Southern colonies have also been heavy. In the face of this it is

Agents' Defence Fund. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 July 1896

Agents' Defence Fund. Amounts received since our last : — & 8. d. James Mitchell ? 1 1 0 R. F. Irving ? 0 10 0 R. Henderson ? 0 5 0 D. Fletcher ? 10 0 £2 16 0 Amount acknowledged previously : £65 1 0 It may be as well to remark now that the amount contributed is very disappointing ! The delegates who ordered the change to be made pro mised to recoup the agents their ex penses. The fighb was, to have respon sibility end at the fall of the hammer, just as in the sale of anything else. When the beasts were sold at Home bush they were to be sold for keeps. There was a big fighb over it. The agents secured the best advice, and doctors' fees and lawyers' fees made a big bill. The last accounb was £269 18s 3d. Towards this the secretary (Mr. R. McMillan) has received £67 17s. This is shocking ! and the secre tary has the hump of a dromedary over it. If no further amounts are sent in he will hand bhe total over to the agents this month, and apologise for the dele gates who didn'b wa...

Young. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 July 1896

Young. (from our own correspondent.) Lamb Marking. — Some of the sta tions have finished marking, and although it goes without saying that the drought has adversely affected averages, yet on the whole the verdict is that ' it might have been a good deal worse.' The Crop. — All the cereals may be said to be in. There is a greater area under crop than there was last year, and, as far as present indications of the season may be relied on, there will be a good yield. Another Pest. — An English fox was lately seen on Greenbank Station, near here, being the second found in the district, one having been killed on the Stoney Creek Station some eighteen months ago. Unfortunately this last one made his escape. The weather. — A cold snap oame suddenly this morning, and another fall of snow would not surprise us. July 8th, 1896.
