Football. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 27 June 1913

Football. Owing to a number of senior players in the district being absent in Sydney the senior competitions were suspended, on Saturday afternoon, aud the juniors had the privilege of commanding the whole of the attention. In oue respect at least, they deserve more encourage ment that the senior players, because they keep themselves iu condition, and do make an effort to play the game as it should be played.. The chief attraction billed for Saturday was the match be tween Eastern Suburbs juniors aud 'the Horseshoe Bend, . but- while this match was bright and crisp, and above the ordinary, the best game of the day was played by East Maitland and Raymond Terrace third juuiors, and it would not be too much to say that it was the best junior game witnessed on the ground. The boys tossed the ball about splendid ly, fielded and tackled well, and both ou the attack and ou the defensive exhibited tactics that would not be possible to the senior players in the district. The keen est of exci...

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 27 June 1913

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine. ' There is a lot of truth in the ibove homely illustration, it is a great mistake to put off needed repairs too long/ or to, run anything uutil it comes to a dead stop. It is the wisest and most economical policy to periodically overhaul all working plants and tools of trade to ensure that we obtain the best results from their use. We sup pose 111 all persmls-tliere is one period of 1 the vear~when things are not so busy as at other: tunes,, this is wheu . needed repairs should be attended to. Por inefauce, dairy- 1 ing always eases off with the winter months and this is the tune. to overhaul the Alfa liaval Separator. .If only one or two duplicate parts require replacement this - can easily be done at home as all the duplicates are most accurately made and in replacing them 110 fittinc: is required. The Orchard. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 27 June 1913

The Orchard. Orchardists will find it advisable at this season of the year to go through their orchards, marking un profitable trees for re- working early in the coming spring. Trees that do not bear good marketable fruit, or that are unsuited ito local condi tions, or that are particularly subject to disease can often be renovated to real advantage. ,Tne cultivation oi good^e^-ittV^lVeff^o -more - «\5rk than poor ones, and there is nothing to the latter class when grafting will perhaps transfer them to the former. Qld trees are often top-grafted in preference to building, as by insert ing grafts in the branches close to the trunk many of them . will grow if properly put in. For this purpose, the cleft-graft is the easiest and most useful. YouDg apple or pear trees are easily worked by means of the strap-graft, which makes an excel lent union, but it requires experi ence and practice, and in the case of peach trees is less successful. The scions should be taken from good, healthy tr...

Disease in Stock and Post Mortem Examinations. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 27 June 1913

Disease in Stock and Post Mortem Examinations. At the Nairaudera branch of the Agricultural Bureau tho Stook In spector for the district recently drew the attention of stookowners to the importance of carefully investigating every case of disease or death that might occur among stock. Unfortu nately it is the mostly highly bred, and therefore most valuable stock. that are most susceptible to disease — especially is this the case, he thought, with highly bred draught horses. It is remarkable what a high percentage of deaths are the results of causes which are vaguely understood or altogether unexplained, even though, as this officer suggests, a little know ledge, such as could easily be ob tained by every farmer, might be come a material factor iu reducing the heavy losses fchau annually occur.* A specific knowledge of certain diseases is not essential to usefulness in this way. Nearly every farmer when acting as his own butcher (as ^ hundreds do) could, acquire much of tfie'Eubwle^g...
