ORANGE DEMONSTRATION. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 2 September 1882

ORANGE DEMONSTRATION. TPE opening of a Distiict Grand Lodge, and the 13th Anniversary of No. 52-tbe Royal Windsor Lodge, on Tuesday last, was the occasion of a great demonstration by our Orange friends. The business of opening the new Grand Lodge took place in the morning, in the Wesleyan Schoolroom - delegates from other district lodge and Grand Lod^e Officers being present in considerable number. After the business nad concluded, these gentlemen adjourned to the Fitzroy Hotel, where a sumptuous banquet awaited them. The tea meeting, which, was adver- tised for 5*30 p.m., was held in the Church oí England Schoolroom, in New-street, and the approach thereto was decorated with flags and streamers ; and the building itself tastefully dressed with bunting, evergreens, and suitable mottoes-" Civil and Religious Liberty" and "No Surrender" being pro- minent. There was a great rush to secure seats at the first tables, bur. the arrangements for admitting the public were execrably bad womeu...

HAWKESBURY SPRING MEETING. SECOND DAY. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 2 September 1882

HAWKESBURY SPRING MEETING. SECOND DAY. SATURDAY was all that could be wished for by all sections of the public-whether for racing or for mere sightseers ; it was a de ci ¡ed help to make the last day of the Meet- ing the su.cess it was. The attendance was very great ; and, we believe the takings from all sources were such as to make the hearts of the committee right gl.id. We are pleased to know it was so, for the present committee, with their able secre- tary, have done so much to make the Hawkes burj Course and all its surroundings a model race course-little, if any, inferior to Rand- wick. The German band discoursed sweet music during the day, but-and here is a matier we think the committee will yet have to deal with-however good the music may | have been, the outside public beard little af it ; for it was a matter of impossibility to get near the palisading to listen, and if oue did 1 so, it was impossible to hear from the babel of voices from the 5-to-l-bar-l men, who seem to t...

SPARKS [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 2 September 1882

SPARES Ile thought he had him. Dr. Vaughan has just 2>ublished a book on the " Divine Character of Christ," and therein he extolls J. 8. Mills as the " highest and best repre- sentative of modern thought," while in another lecture he styles the same philoso- pher as "the highest and best type of the infidelity of the day." How's this for con- sistency ? Then again, the Doctor says " Over 1800 years are gone by, and yet he (Christ) reigns in willing, adoring hearts, etc., etc., perhaps more universally and moro power- fully than ever," seemingly forgetful that he had just said, " We 'find infidelity rampant, and denial everjrday growing more strong." Now, after that, what becomes of all the Archbishop's reasoning and logical acumen ? I I like your "war" item last week muchly; "brevity is the soul of wit," and it is also truth, in this case ; for, after all, when all the cablegrams are boiled down, your par. contained the sum total of them. Yerily, there's a sting in the public min...

FARM AND GARDEN. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 9 September 1882

FARM AND GARDEN. Ix Australia, notwithstanding that cia}, chemically, contains more fertilizers than sand, it is by no means a desirable soil for (. litigation. The sandy soils, even though very poor in nutriment, are loose, and im- bi i io the slightest moisture, which is highly important lo »puick growing grasses; where- as, ci.i v. in tiiis climate, gets so thoroughly naked in dry seasons, that it becomes too brick-like to admit either moisture or air. If still clav soils become thoroughly pulverized they ;ire good ; but the labour and manure recured for this, is more than our poorer agriculturists could afford. We have seen clay trenched down to the cold, blue and white, putty-like stuff over hung iron stone, and by careful and incessant spade hus- bandry, aided by a mixture of turf and chippings thoroughly worked in, it has become excellent soil-especially for trees both fruit and ornamental. Still, for economic reasons, no maa will work such land it ho has other to operate upo...
