MARRIAGES IN SYNAGOGUE. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

MARRIAGES IN SYNAGOGUE. tvv fUo FVliror of the Hebrew Standard. UNITED STATES AND SPAIN. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

UNITED STATES AND SPAIN. The difference in the credit of the United States and that of Spain on the London Stock exchange on the 18th March, the ' S. M. Herald's ' latest mail date, is indicated by the quotations for their respective 4- per cent, stocks an follows : — United States, 4 per cent ? ^125-130 Spanish bonds, 4 per cent. ... ... 54£-54£ The United States bonds on the date named had fallen about three points trom the mgnest reacnea during the present year, and at the average price of 127* they yield the investor about £2 13s per cent. The' Spanish bonds, on the other hand, had fallen 8& points, and at 54-i the yield to the holder is £7 7s per cent. Thus, then, if the Government of the United States requires £10,000,000 additional to prosecute the war, it will obtain the accomodation for ^265,000 per annum, where ^735,000 would have to be paid by Spain, which is thus handicapped not only for being poor and weak, but for having her finances in a dis ordered condition....

Are Afghans Israelites? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

Are Afghans Israelites? According to the ?' Calcutta Review,' proof appears to be accumulating for the claim of the Pathans (that is. the Afghans together with the doughty tribes who have just been giving the Indian Government so much trouble) that they are indeed the Bene Israel they claim to be. In the book of Esdras we are told that the Ten Tribes of Israel journeyed on from Mesopotamia and Media for the space of a year and a half, to 'another land,' called Arzareth (iv Esdras, xiii, 45). This is identified with Afghanistan where the people still pride themselves on their Hebraic caste of countenance and fondness for Hebrew names. It is claimed that the moun tain range called the Takht-i-Suleiman (Solo mon's seat) was so known long before the advent of Islam, and that the important clan of the Yusufzias (Sons of Joseph) are descendants of Ephraim. Further, such customs as the brother-in law marrying a childless widow, or the infliction of death by means of stoning, still flourish...

'ALL IS VANITY' gaitti th© Preacher ? And the preacher is right, althongh he did'nt refer to Bicycles. There is, however, a vanity which everyone has in life— a proper desire to out shine his fellows— to have the BEST TO BE GOT. In bicycles this is just as easy as possible. Few will dispute the fact that to-day, as in years past, it keeps, up the enviable reputation of being the Best Bicycle in the World. BEMETT AND WOOD, Ltd., 397 George-street, Sole Agents.

Jewish Marriages. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

Jewish Marriages. 'We raise our daughters (writes TSTickerdown in the Amarican Israelite) with almost the exclusive view of getting them married by the time they are twenty years or' age. If they happen to remain unmarried at thirty, we feel as if their mission in life had failed of accomplishment and that they might as well not have been born. Yet, with all this stress placed upon marriage, we do less to prepare our daughters for it than for anything else under the sun. 'We spend vast sums of money on accomplishments of all kinds, and make the girls devote endless time to learning everything except those things which are connected with marriage and the raising o£ children . How supreme such folly is can be appreciated by every intelligent person, for it is generally known n;«w-a-days how much sorrow and suffering can be averted by a little knowledge. There are thousands and thousands of mothers among the so-called better classes to-day who pose before the world as philantrophists, ...
