MR. J. B. STRAUGHAN FAREWELLED. About 40 townsmen gathered at the Shire Hall on Tuesday night to bid fare well to Mr J. B. Straughan, manager of the Beaufort branch of the State Savings Bank for about two years, who has been promoted and transferred to Wonthaggi. During his stay here Mr Straughan has become very popular both in his private and official capacity. He acted as secretary of the local movement to establish swimming baths, ami the Football and Fox Terrier Cours ing Clubs, making hosts of friends amongst the sporting fraternity. He also took a keen interest in the Thistle Club, Town Band, Jockey and Gun Clubs. Tuesday night's gathering was of a very convivial and enjoyable nature, and Cr. R. A. D. Sinclair presided. Mr Straughan was presented with a tangible token of esteem in the shape of a purse containing 14 sovereigns. During the evening harmony was contributed by Messrs S. Fraser and C. Franklin. Despite the inclement . weather, there was a representative gathering of about 25 citizcns at the Shire Mull on Monday night, -when a public farewell was tendered to Mr W. Sil ver, postmaster at Beaufort for six vears. Mr Silver, who has been promoted and transferred to 'Roch ester, left for his new sphere of labor at the latter end of the .week, and the Beaufort office was taken over, by Mr J. Moroney, of Mary borough. During his stay here, Mr Silver, by his uniform courtesy and tact, has won the warmest regard of all classes. of the community. In addition to his valuable services in his official capacity, Mr Silver acted as correspondent of the State, school committee in which body he took a keen interest.
