Even during bis last illness, the aged man graphically described the departure of the English! officers for the field on which the battle ; of Waterloo was subsequently fought. Byron immortalized the incident, but in a note he cast some doubt upon the reality of the event. Mr. Siddons, how-, ever, maintained its utmost accuracy.' He was an actor at seventeen. CJHAFTEll XL VIII. " He luhum■ passion rules is bent to meet his death? Nevertheless, us ho re-enters the Castle to-night— Saturday—his first thought is for her. Ho mounts the staircase quiokly, and .knocking at her door responds eagerly to her permission to enter. IIo can seo at a glance that she is looking oxtrcmoly ill, whito and listless, and with hoavy iiurplo shadows beneath her large, grey eyes. She is dressed in a simple white gown, with a knot of ribbon at her throat, and her.: hair is bound at the back in a looso fashion that also bespeaks weariness. She 'is lying back in her chair, 'and there is enough weakness in her attitude to appeal to his sense of pit...
