CASTOR OIL. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 2 August 1915

CASTOR OIL. Australia is importing the castor oil bean heavily from Java, according to the Mildura "Cultivator." Melbourne firms are crushing 300 gallons per day. Mel bourne, things being normal, would quote about £10 to £11 per ton. Manufacturers in that city are, the Mildura paper states, prepared to send seed, known to yield a high percentage of oil, to any buyer, and the better the result in growing the bet ter the price offered for produce. On the average, 1 ton of seed yields 1 ton of oil. It might be worth while looking further into the possibilities of this crop. In quiries will be made if any settler is in terested.

THE IRRIGATOR'S GARDEN. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 2 August 1915

THE IRRIGATOR'S GARDEN. The Superintendent of the Nebraska Agricultural Station recently urged set tlers on American projects, through the columns of the " Irrigation Age," to see to it that the kitchen garden was not neglected. No part of the irrigator's farm, he said, would bring in better re sults in money actually saved than the kitchen garden, and he saw no reason why on average soil, and under average conditions abundant fresh vegetables should not be produced for table use, if not for canning purposes. The summing up of this article contains such a fund of valuable information that it is quoted almost in full: A garden of one-third to one-half acre should be large enough to supply the average family with all the vegetables required and with some small fruit as well. Plant .small amounts of the various vegetables, and make several plantings during the season. If possible, protect the garden with a windbreak. Only well-decayed stable manure should be used for fertiliser, and th...

Green Manure. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 2 August 1915

Green Manure. The most valuable green manures are those which not only yield a large amount of organic matter, but also have the power of gathering from the air the most valu able, commercially, of all the elements of plant food-nitrogen. All isuch plants be long to the family of legume's, and among them may be noted peas, beans, vetches, lucerne, the clovers and lupins. How Green Manuring' Improves the Soil. -Green manure improves the soil in many ways. Among them may be mentioned the following, taken from an American bulletin. 1. By its building action on the soil particles and by its sponge-like absorp tive power, organic matter makes sandy soils more retentive of moisture. (Im proves water holding power). 2. By its light yet bulky mass it pre vents the extremely fine., particles of clay soils from running together and becom ing cemented. (Improves essential fea ture of aeration in heavy soils). 3. Organic matter contains most of the nitrogen found in s'oils and all plants ex cep...

What to Plant. ORANGES. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 2 August 1915

What to Plant. ORANGES. Many settlers are no doubt considering the varieties which they will plant out this year in the section of their farm that they have decided to set apart for citrus culture. Last year, about this time, an article was published in these columns strongly recommending settlers to plant for their main crop those two well-known varieties, the Washington Navel and Late Valencia, and, in addition, mention was made of such varieties as Mediterranean Sweet and Joppa. A visit was paid recently to the Ex periment Farm to ascertain whether the results obtained from the trees of these varieties already planted there were such as to in any way necessitate the altering of the advice given last year, but, as far as the main crop is concerned, it will be seen from the following notes that the farm results only tend to confirm the soundness of the advice already given. Washington Navel.-Of the oranges planted at the Experiment Farm in 1908, the Washington Navel has undoubtedly...

A TETHERING FIXTURE FOR ORCHARDS. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 2 August 1915

A TETHERING FIXTURE FOR i ORCHARDS. i A very simple and effective tethering fixture for use in orchards when there is a bit of feed to be picked between the trees was recently illustrated in the "California Cultivator." Two solid stakes are connected by a length ' of strong galvanised wire (say No. 8), as many feet long as is desired-20 ft. is a good average length. One end of a short chain is slipped over the wire, and the other end is fixed up for attachment to the neck of the animal desired to be tet hered. The stakes are driven into the ground on a line parallel to the trees so as to tightly stretch the connecting wire. The animal thus has a considerable amount of freedom up and down, the wire giving access to a long narrow strip of grazing without there be ing any possibility of its reaching out -far on either side and doing an injury to the trees in the orchard. With an outfit of this , kind a couple of cows could1 be kept in among the orchard trees for a few hours each day wi...

TREATMENT OF FRUIT TREES AFTER TAKING DELIVERY FROM THE NURSERY. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 2 August 1915

TREATMENT OF FRUIT TREES AFTER TAKING DELIVERY FROM THE NURSERY. The attention of settlers obtaining trees from the Leeton Nursery is special ly drawn to the following points that are of very great importande: 1. All deciduous trees should be taken delivery of not later than the first week in August, and planted at latest by the last week in August. The best months to plant are June and July. 2. Damp bags should be provided for covering the young trees when taken from the nursery, thus preventing exposure of the roots to wind and sun. 3. A suitable trench, according to the number of trees to be heeled in, should be previously prepared to receive the trees upon arrival at the farm. The trench should be at least ten inches deep and eighteen inches across. 4. The bundles should be suitably and legibly labelled, and a stake or board placed between the varieties in the trenches to prevent any chance of their becoming mixed. 5. A suitable plan should be made of the orchard when planting. ...

Type Pig Styes. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 2 August 1915

Type Pig Sty es. BY H. R. ALEXANDER. As with all other farm buildings, pig styes or pig sheds can be built elaborately or otherwise, as the pocket of the man concerned warrants. Elaborate pig styes are not necessary. All the pig needs is a weather-proofed well-floored shed, and in building this shed the owner of the pig, for his own comfort's sake, should see to it that every means is given to facilitate and make easy the cleaning of pens and the feeding and general care of his pigs. The more easily pigs can be fed the bet ter will that work be done, as no matter how careful a man is and how anxious he is to always see that every section of farm work is properly performed, he must leave some work to the . hired man, and it' the hired man finds everything handy and easily got at there is a better prospect of his doing work well than there would be if he found conditions otherwise. In draw ing out plans for guidance of settlers in the erection of their. pig styes on the Areas, conside...
