IMPROPER FEEDING OF HORSES. [Newspaper Article] — The Yarragon, Trafalgar & Moe Settlement News — 12 July 1906

IMPROPER FEEDING OF HORSES, It has been asserted that half the mortality amongst horags occurs through gastroenteric trouble;;' Tgo large quantities of food, 'itf regular Intervals, and on fodft* ^im proper character or bad QtdUitflraref mostly to blame; in fact, there is no „ gastro^enferfc'TroQDTetf0^ WfeS? consequence of dietetic errors and bad management. In most cases the feed ing of the team is left almost entirely to the carter, and, although he may be has the mania of his class—a great desire to have his horses fat; and it is with him an article of faith that when a horse is not working he ought to be well, and does not know exactly what they are costing t<UceeD. . Seldom is any attempt made to suit tE6 ration to the work or to the individual re quirements of each animal. In economical horse-feeding both the horse and his work have to be consid ered, and allowance made for the kind, quantity, and quality of food used. No fixed diet can be mada for all horses, eith...

TEMPERANCE MATTERS. GENERAL ITEMS. [COMMUNICATED.] [Newspaper Article] — The Yarragon, Trafalgar & Moe Settlement News — 12 July 1906

TEMPERANCE MATTERS. GENERAL ITEMS. [Communicated.] On Thursday, April 10, Mr. L. Jones moved—"That this House notes with satisfaction the successful working of the local option laws in the colonies, and approves the principle on which those laws are based, namely, that the people ought to possess the power, through the vote of the local electors, to protect themselves against the ad mitted evil of the liquor traffic." 271? voted for the resolution and 44 against. Never in the history of the British Parliament has the principle of local option secured such a win as this. In 1883, by a majority of 87, the House affirmed the necessity of a local option measure. There is a big difference between a majority of 87 and one of 230. Ab a matter of fact only one liberal oil April 10 voted against the resolution, and every labour member supported it. "San Francisco has been for the past fortnight absolutely free from crimes of violence. There have been flo street brawls, and except for some de...

WHAT IT MEANS TO DAIRYMEN, During the past butter season the directors and managers of nearly every co-operative butter factory in South Gippsland, whenever they met, in dulged in a joint wail anent the fickle ness of their suppliers. In every district, cream whicli should have been treated at the local factory, was sent away to proprietory companies mostly situated in Melbourne. The old pro prietary girl it seems, still possesses a j charm or two which even a butter commission could not rob her; and so, whenever Mr. Udderstretcher differs from the manager of the local factory as to "what was in that can," the memory of the old "girl's smile revives, aud next week she gets a can or two.
