BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. August 6. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 18 August 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. PROM ODE SPECIAL COKHfcSPOKDKNT. Au{ru«t G. ALLOW me to congratulate yon, f.ir, on ex tending your political influence from BInckall to Brisbane. To-dsy, in Queen-street, 1 saw a little group earnestly gazing on n picture stuck in the window of Watson, Ferguson & CO.'b shop, and I discovered that they were absorbed in tbc contemplation of your car* toon illustrating tlie two kinds of bushrang ing, in which your artist lias very happily hit, the prevalent sentiment here. The cole of the last number uf 1'vtwh indicates also the ret of the popular current. However, to pick up my narrative of events. When the House met on Tuesday, it wiib expected tbnt stonewalling would be resumed, but meanwhile n new sensation had been provided. Douglas hod caused to be published in the Courur a condensation of the evidence taken at the first sitting of the fiteel llail Committee. The Ministerial benches were full, and only Griffith and three other men dotted the Opposition t...

Queensland Atrocities. (Continued from August 11.) [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 18 August 1880

Queensland Atrooities. BY AN EX-TROOPER. (Continued from Angust 11.) AND now, sir, let us more closely consider the outrages forming the subject of this letter. The Queensland attrocities may be divided into two classes: those which are true, auil   those which are not true. Of those which are true we will first con- cider those which have been perpetrated by the native police. For there can be no doubt there bave been instances of such crnelties, though I believe they are very rare. It seems to be a common impression that an officcr has very little control over his troopers, and that the latter when in action are able to give full play to their brutal passions in- spite of all that their chief can do. This is a great mistake. I do not believe there is more strict discipline in any force in the world than then is in our native polioe. Even in cases when the officer cannot follow to the actual scene of action the dread of incurring his displeasure is so great that the tr...

The Western Champion. Vita sine literia more est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 1880. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 25 August 1880

©!te (fhampimr. Ftto tine liUrit mert at. BLAGKALL, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25,1B80, THE Pacific Islanders Bill, npon which it was anticipated there would be so much violent discussion, hag safely floated over the dangeroqs ocean of party politics to the secure haven of the Legislative Council. The Kanaka question was and is a ticklish one to advocate openly, and members desirous of retaining the favor of their constitu ents fought very shy of opposing the clause for prohibiting Kanakas from being employed inland. Mr. BTEVENSOK wag the only member who gave fall vent to his opinions, and boldly stated that he was glad to take advantage of a mere fluke to get a number of Kanakas into his service. He believed he had a per fect right' to efaploy whom he chose, and he should take care to do so if it suited him. We cannot blame Mr. STKVEBBOIT as an employer forgiving utterance to thesa sentiments, bat as a UgitltUor he ought to remember that his doty is not to make laws to benefit him self and ...
