(To tlA Editor.) Sir--As the non-resident subscribers to the Alexandra Hospital Fund may attach undue importance to the entertainments Ittely given at the Crnor Hotel by the talented managers and financiers of the U. T. Flat Alluvia( Mining Company, and may possibly fear that the Hospital funds may get into the same hrinds, and be as usefully epent as the capital of the flute re ferred to, I-desire, with ybur permission, to assure those really interested in tho Hospital that there is no danger of any such cala mity. ?. As I did not agree with an 'of the ob jects of the "speakers, except the estnblish Veat of a Court of higher criminal jurisdic tion, I did not a'tend the last meeting. tuit I "m pleased to hear that the Union Bank and the storekeepers are to be wiped out prier to any onslaught being made in the Hospital money. The. usual fortnightly meeting of thq Alexandra Shire Council was held on. Tues. day [last, present--J. Peterkin (President), and Crs Hall, Kelly, Cronin, Perkins, Coyno, O'IRourke, and VWhiting. The busi ness was of an unimportanb nature. Some repairs were ordered to be effected under the saperintondence of the Public Works. Com mittee to the offices occupied by Mr Coster. 'Amongst the correspondence was a letter from Mr Allardyce, asking what steps had been taken with regard. to the roads. through his pre-emptive section, namely.. the " sur veyed road"' and the "proposed road"Y and asking the Council to have one road pro claimed, that he mirht close up the other. Cr Perkins thought both roads objectionable, and, on his suggestion the matter was de fetred' till next meeting, he promised, in the meantime, to visit the ground, and report thereon. The motion requiring Mr Downing to pay the amount of Mr. Greig's claim was rescinded. The rerort of the Finaace Com mittee recommending pay...

(T thw .Editor.) _. ,. Sir-One matter of Adisatisfaction' which has been for many months pest painfully fermenting in the minds of the people, came somewhat startlingly to the surface at the late meeting. The Union Bank of Austra lia has long enjoyed a monopoly in this place. 'rTheo gross mismanagement of another Bank branch, at one time opened at Alexan dla. served rather' to rivet :the ohalin'rhich. bound the Union Bank, like ..ole@iige's dead albatross, round our necks. The agent of- the Union Bank here, although of all banking officials the most estimable in cha racter, gentlemanly in manners, and oblig ing to the last degree, is bound by the letter of his instructions from the head ofliie, and we can easily read and learn the nature of those instructions by the blighting effect' they are producing upon our district and its. inhabitants. Departing. from the only true principle of Banking, as recognised "by the highest authorities on the subject, namely, the derivation of profits...

Correspondence. PUBLIC MEETING AMUSEMENTS. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 3 June 1870

PUBLIC MEETING AMUSEMENTS. (To the Editor.) Sir-Although ' rushieg into print" is especially distasteful to me, I cannot hellp uttering, with your permission, my mild protest against the sort of amusement indul god in on Saturday evening last at the ex pense of the institution I repfresent, on the occasion of the public meeting held to establish Law Courte, and to disesalblish the devoted Hospital Committee. Having received some hints cf the style of Messrs -nmith and KannegieJser's eloquence on that ocoasion, the sample supplied quite satisfies me of the character of the whole ex hibition. A Bank appeara to be invariably considered a fair object for abuse, and but soldom, in any case, gets fair play; how much less so when delivered in globe unto the tender mercies of Messrs Smith and Kannogiesser's oratory, TIhe combative qualities lof both these gentleman are well known, and it io not diflirult to understand what a rich treat such an object of attack as the Union Bank would afford...

Original Poetry. DOCTOR DASH. AIR—Tommy Dodd [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 10 June 1870

Drigirnal Yurtrij. '---C DOCTOR DASH.o Ata-Tommy Dodd I lead a somewhat curious lifoin this ere mountain town, Especially as Indies' man, I'm somewhat of renown. I have a taste for gallantry which nothing can albash, It is the weakness and the strength of this child, Doctor DI.sh. Chorus. But I'm let in when I begin, Doctor Dash, Doctor Dash. To carry on requires somo tin, Doctor. Dash. Doctor Dash. Come, my boys, I'm famous now, Doctor Dash, Doctor Dash, Ducks or drakes, no matter how, Hurrah I for Doctor Dash. 3My character's not very good by evidence confess'd, But I'm the only quack up here; I'm not at all distressed. The women I can :' tiddle-wink,'" the husbands' heads I'll smash, And :ducks I'll bag, and call them "larks,"' my name is Doctor Dash,. But I'm lot in, ice. Now If I bring a case to town, you know it cannot pass Without the risk of forking out, and making :me an ass I And ripping up'old putrid sorets, which with my feelings clash ; But all that's nothing, people ta...

A REFUTATION. To the Editor of the Mansfield Independent. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 10 June 1870

A REFUTATION. .To the Editorofr t e Manisafield Independent. Sir-I enclose a paragraph written by me for publication in the Alexandra Times, being a record of the action taken by that Council, in order to remove the stigma at tempted to be cast upon my veracity by the motion carried at the Council meeting on May 3, a full report of which meeting appeared in the Timed of that week. Will it be believed that the independent proprietor of the Times refused to publish either this paragraph or a report of the meeting to which it refers, through fear of giving offence to bMr Coster, who at moct was only chargeable with an inconvenient defect of memory on the occasion ? Will you kindly find space in your valu able journal for this letter and the rejected paragraph (I send it as I took it from the file at the Times office), and oblige Yours sincerely. W. DOWNING. "A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM." [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 10 June 1870

"A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM." Hore I sit, and watch the blaze, Building castles as I gaze- Airy castles, high and higher, Sitting cozy by the fire. Thilking, thinking, all alone, Of others' bseineos and my own. Comfortably musing, thinking, Feeling sleepy. slowly winking i ~idding, nodding--aff I go. I must have slept an hour or so. Suddenly I said, " Hallo I' That ,halr wan vacant, I am sore, - nHallo I rd like to know who you are F" For there, xanotly opposite. There'sat a figure in the lilht Of fire's uncertain iuddy glow, And lamp untrimm'd and burning low. It had two eyes as black as night, And closer set'than might be right. A nose-well, that would pick a pipe And skin the color of fried tripe. With very thin and lantern jaws, And pointed chin, and awful paws. But there the figure sat so still, I felt a kind of creeping chill. Indeed 'tras strange i but, anyhow. Mly pipe being out I lit it now, To find if I did dream or not, But kept tmy eyes upon the spot Where.the vile thing was...
