On (he arrival of the train from the West, having taken Ihe mails for ihe office on board the wagon used lo convey the mail to and from the depot, he found on arriving at the office, that one of the bags was rr.issing, nnd immediately reported the fact to our worthy Postmaster. Mr. Stevens, who, having instituted a search, thinking that the bag might have dropped from tbe wagon on the route, coincided ntth the clerk in the opinion that the bag had been stolen. From U« Coudenport Journal. The Rights •! Juries. The glory of the common law is its universal Trial by Jury. In fact, no man's liberty is worth a fig, when the writ of habtai corput and the right of trial by jury are Dot wilbin the reach of every person. Hence all oppcessors, and oil apologist* fur oppresion are constantly making efforts lo destroy or fritter away the influence of Juries. Hence the denial of this great.safeguard of liberty in the Fugitive Slave Bjll, The slaveholder knew perfectly well that he could always purchase a ten dollar Commissioner who Would do his bidding. But lo submit his cUim to the bones and sinews of a man, to the decision of twelve independent citizens of a free Slate, was not to be thought of, because these would sciutinize the ' evidence, and if there were any doubts in the case, would decide in favor of liberty.
