PEDESTBIANISM . A STUMPER FOR FAST MEN . We did expect to placo before our readers the particulars of a match , said to have been made between Mickey Froc and the North Star , but we believe there is some impediment in thc way to making the match , though the fault does not lio with Mickey , as he has called upon us , and offered every inducement to bring the North Star to terms . To make things moro clearly understood , and to give pedestrians a fair chance , Mickey Free desires us to publish tho following challenge , to whomsoever may be disposed to meet him on fair and friendly terms . At the hurdle leaping at Bergen Point , on Christmas fday , we heard much boasting on the part of various sporting celebrities then present , and wo think if any of them are anxious for a match , as they seemed to bc , they will not fail to make the fact known . Here is the CHALLENGE . Jersey Cily , January 17 th , 1854 . E DITOR OP THE C LIPPER : S IR , —I am now ready to appear before the public ...

[ TBIAL OF THE BOYAL GEORGE , 120 £ TJNS . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 21 January 1854

[ TBIAL OF THE BOYAL GEORGE , 120 £ TJNS . A trial of considerable importance took place on Tuesday , which has fully set at rest the doubts entertained in many quarters as to the utility of converting old 120 gun ships of thc royal navy inlo screw propeller steamships without cutting them in two . and lengthening them , to adapt them to the new mode of auxiliary propulsion . Thc success which ^ attended the lengthening of the Duke of Wellington , 131 , screwsteam ship , induced the authorities at the Admirality to make an experiment on the Itoyal George , 120 , to ascertain the speed that would be obtained by fitting her with engines , of 400 horse power without cutting hcr in two , or making any other alteration except the cutting out ofthe dead wood at the stern for the reception of thc screw , and making a well for the purpose of taking it upon deck . A contract was consequently entered into with John Penn and Sons , to lit the Koyal G * orgc , ICO , with their patent trunk engi...

TUBKISH TOBTUBE . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 21 January 1854

TUBKISH TOBTUBE . Listen to me , said Rodngo , raising his voice . Poor Asian was by this time trembling from head to foot , his cheek , and lips , and hands looked completely bloodless . Hear what you have to choose if you refuse to make a full confession of the truth . Do you know tbe , meaning of that ugly bed there , that looks so much like an iron ladder 1 Do you know its use 1 Wc will have you laid on that couch for case , when you have been flogged till your back looks like a blood puddle ; and that ladder will draw out your legs and arms some inches beyond tlieir natural length , and let them back again with a jerk that shall make all the joints and sinews in yourbody crack like a report of pistols . If you are still stubborn , we will havc your hands tied finger to finger ; and one ot those men shall , with a hummer , drive in wooden splinters between your nails and flesh . And if that fail to soften your perverseness , we will havc lighted candles held to your face and nos...
