AMERICAN FARM ANIMALS-NO . 24 . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 29 July 1880

AMERICAN FARM ANIMALS-NO . 24 . SHORT-HORN CATTLE . Short-Horns are the most numerous , most widely distributed and most popular of the improved breeds of cattle . It is said there are more Short-Horn cattle in England than of all other pure breeds combined . It is clearly true that the ShortHorns outnumber all other breeds in the United States . The nineteenth volume of the American Short-Horn Herd Book , issued in 1880 , contains the pedigrees of 3 , 058 bulls , bringing the total number of bulls recorded in this herd hook to 37 , 368 , almost exactly half having been recorded in the last six years . Some of these numbers represent animals twice recorded , but there are many hundreds of well bred bulls of this breed which are not recorded . Short-Horns are largely bred in many parts of the United States , and the greater part of the best beef cattle of the country have more or less of this blood . This breed has done more for the improvement of the cattle of America than has any o...

QUERIES AND ANSWERS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 29 July 1880

QUERIES AND ANSWERS . QUERY : GLANDERS on NOT . —il . A . Highland Park , Illinois , writes : Being a subscriber to your valuable paper , I would like a little information respecting my horse . He has bad a running from the nose for about six weeks—more or less . The discharge is a whitish yellow , and a slight cough , that is about all I can discover . One of my neighbors says it is the glanders , another says it arises from decayed teeth , and the third individual declares the disease to be farcey ; but there is nothing to be seen only the discharge , which is very offensive . He eats well , and works right along every day . The discharge is from the right nostril . Please give me some light on the subject . REPLY : This is a question which is often asked , and one not at all times easy to answer definitely , for the simple reason that there are so many diseases which are accompanied with symptoms that are liable to be mistaken for glanders . A mere written statement , which is no...

THE DAIRY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 29 July 1880

THE DAIRY . GRAIN CROPS ON DAIRY FARMS . Did we know thc authorship ot the following , we should cheerfully give the proper credit . We find it among the clippings in the Am . Dairyman : The very best grain crops can be grown upon dairy farms . It was upon a dairyfarm that the largest corn crop on a field , viz ., 150 bushels of grain per acre , was frown . The soil of those farms that are evotcd to feeding cows must necessarily increase in fertility . As the chief product that is removed is milk , it very small proportion of the elements of fertility are carried off , while a large addition is made in lhe shape of purchased food , without which few dairies can be profitably managed . Where the cows receive a daily ration of from two to six quarts of grain food daily , a very large addition is made to the fertility of Uie soil . This will be made apparent by the following figures : Nitrottn . Potash . Phosplirc Acid . 5 , 000 ll ) S . ofmllkcontains 34 7 X IH 1 , 000 lbs . of bran 2...

We tare now revising ; our exchange list . If by mistake we drop papers that are entitled to the REVIEW In exchange we will thank the publishers to notify us at once . THE experiment of importing live hogs from the United States to Germany has proved a success . Of 900 on the Berlin only 40 died during the voyage , and this being less than five per cent ., is considered trifling . They were imported for a large packing house in Hanover . Further shipments are to be made . The recent measure against American bacon applies only to small joints , etc . Whole hams are not prohibited . THE wheat harvest in Bucharest is in progress , and the crop is in general a flne one . A number of American farming implements have been flbld there . Their superior quality and extreme lightness have attracted the attention of intelligent farmers , who are beginning to realize that they must introduce American labor-saving implements if they desire to compete in the grain markets of central and western E...

LOCATING THE STATE FAIR [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 29 July 1880

LOCATING THE STATE FAIR Readers of the FARMERS REVIEW will remember that some months ago the Secretary of the State Board of Agriculture , under the instruction of the Board , submitted the following questions to the county societies of the State : 1 . Are you in favor of a permanent location of the State fair ? 2 . If so , are you in favor of a location at a single point in the central part of the State ? 3 . Do you favor a location at a central point in each of the grand divisions of the State ? Up to date we understand that Secretary Fisher has received replies from only nineteen out of something over a hundred local agricultural societies in the State , which shows a remarkable indifference upon the subject . So far this vote is as follows : In favor of Springfield , the coun ties of Williamson , Fayette , Gallatin , Brown , Jefferson , Menard and Pope . In favor of central location , no place named , the counties of Cumberland , Fulton , McLean , Hardin and Adams . In favor of ...

FROM THE WEST TO THE SEA [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 29 July 1880

FROM THE WEST TO THE SEA The growth of the Northwestern States during the 1 ast twenty years has been something that only the word phenomenal can adequately describe , and during the latter half of this period that growth has taken place principally in the States west of Chicago . These States being , all of them , chiefly agricultural States , seeking convenient markets for their great superabundance of grain and live stock , the question of cheap transportation to the Atlantic seaboard is one that assumes greater importance , Justin proportion to the increasing population and productiveness of these Western States . Water communication has long been recognized as the only check of any practical value to be placed upon the natural rapacity of the railroads , and , contrary to general expectation , in spite of the vast increase in railroad communication which has taken place in this country during the period mentioned , the business done by the Erie canal , for instance , is this ye...

A TALK ABOUT NEW ZEALAND [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 29 July 1880

A TALK ABOUT NEW ZEALAND The FARMERS REVIEW mentions with pleasure a call from a Mr . Beaumont , an intelligent English gentleman , for seventeen years a resident of New Zealand , where lie is engaged in the introduction and sale of agricultural implements , seeds , etc . He gave us a number of interesting facts concerning this far-away land . We jot some of them down as they recur to us . New Zealand is made up of three islands containing a total area of about 101 , 500 square miles , a territory nearly as great as that of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . The climate is very fine and healthful . The time of the seasons is the reverse of our own . Summer begins in December , Spring In September , Winter in June , and Autumn in April . The population is some thousands less than that of the City of Chicago . They are engaged in stock raising , general farming and mining . No finer stock country exists . Dogs and rats were the only quadrupeds known there when the Engli...

PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF WHEAT IN GREAT BRITAIN . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 29 July 1880

PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF WHEAT IN GREAT BRITAIN . Dr . Lawes , the great experimenter and agricultural statistician of England , has lately reported his investigations over a period of twenty-seven years , relative to home production , consumption , imports and prices of wheat . He finds that the average consumption of wheat per head of the population in the United Kingdom is 340 lbs . or 5 % bushels . The area under wheat for the last three years has been 20 per cent , less than from 1852 to 1860 . The average production of the twenty-seven years was 27 | bushels per acre . The annual imports averaged about three times as much over the last three as over tbe first eight of the twenty-seven years . The total consumption of wheat per annum has increased from an average of about eighteen million quarters over the first eight years to nearly twenty-four million quarters over the last three years . The price of wheat has declined from an average of about $ 13 . 50 per quarter ( eig...
