Reflections . ( By W . N . Tobie . ) Christmas is past and the New Year has come . We have been so busy giving and receiving presents that we have had no time to reflect on the deeper meaning of the season . It has been a happy time . Christmas is the one season of the year when Christ simply forces Himself upon everybody —Jew and Gentile , infidel and believer , good and bad . Nobody can escape the contagious good-will of the season . This is the day of all the year when tne Christian spirit of love , of making others happy , just gets hold of nearly everybody . It is more catching than the measles . However contemptuous folks may be for the Christian religion at other times , they have to give in at Christmas . The children make them give in . Christmas is past , and now we are wishing one another a Happy New Year . But how shall we be happy ? that is the question . Well , Christmas is the answer . We are happy at Christmas-time because we are trying to make other folks happy . It...

The Future for Berkshire [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Future for Berkshire I am asked again ana again what think about the future tor Berkshires , and I have only this to say : We judge the future by the past and present . Why should you , or any one else , ask me for the future outlook for Berkshire hogs ? Is the Berkshire any more apt to get run over by the automobile or flying machine than any other breed of hogs ? As the millions of American stalwart laboring men go to and fro to work in America s huge shops and mines , with their millions of laborers who are buying meat to feed their loved ones at home , do you fear any loss will come to the Berkshires ? No . We are not producing half enough good Berkshire hams and sausage for these people . They have to be content with a few small pork chops or a small ball of sausage . Why ? Because it is too high for the laboring man to buy in sufficient quantities to feed his poor hungry children all they could eat . As 1 write , my mind flashes back to my boyhood days . Once a boy ? Yes ;...

Best Business in Ten Years . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Best Business in Ten Years . Yates Center , Kans . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Dear Sirs ;—We are pleased to say that we have the best trade in Berkshires we have had since we have been in the business—in ten years . Many of our old customers are coming back after more stock and new ones are coming faster than we can take care of them . We have made our prices as low as we think high-class stock can be handled for , and believe that some of the new breeders are selling below a living price , judging from the letters we are getting . Only a short time ago we received a catalogue from an old and well-known breeder who described his herd as being a wellbred herd , and priced his March gilts at from $ 17 to $ 19 , and $ 25 was the top ; and at that time we had but few gilts of that age that would not have weighed out more money at the regular market price for fat hogs . He either had not grown his hogs well or was throwing away his advertising and extra work . Now , we do ...

Mr . Tabor's Great Bargains . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Mr . Tabors Great Bargains . Monticello , 111 . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Replying to your favor of December 10 th , regarding the outlook for our favorite hog , the Berkshire , will say that I think the future of both feeder and breeder of all classes of swine is very bright . More so for the breeder of pure-bred swine , because the demand is growing stronger each year for a better class of breeding stock of all classes , and in swine there is a very keen demand for good bred sows . This being the case , it is plain that a great many breeders have my opinion of the future outlook for swine , because the- purchasing of brood sows means an increase In swine production . Especially is this so when the sows are Berkshires , as they will raise a larger percentage of pigs farrowed than any other breed ; and the reason is not much of a secret to anyone who has had the pleasure ot handling one of these kind dispositioned Berkshire sows at farrowing time . Here ...

The Berkshire World Helps [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Berkshire World Helps Pontiac , Mich . Editor Berkshire World : I want to speak an encouraging word for ¦ Berkshire breeders In Michigan . Since I commenced breeding Berkshires there has never been such a call for hogs as at present . I believe that great credit is due to your valuable paper for the condition . We all know that the Berkshire is the best all round hog that lives and all we need to do is to let the world know that too , and sales will be all right . This you are doing through your paper and the result is as was stated . I have now about 120 head of the best animals I ever raised . Baron Duke 63 rd has sired for me two especially fine outstanding boars , one of them being Duke s Pontiac Chief 130224 . He is making a record for himself that will be sure to count . His pigs are exceptionally fine , even , long bodied , with splendid feet and legs , and more up-to-date heads than the get of any boar I ever knew . Their backs are right ; their ears are right . I believ...

Outlook Good . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Outlook Good . Wapakoneta , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . - Gentlemen : —Your letter received In regard to the Berkshire Outlook . We assure you that in these parts the Berkshire is the hog 1 of the hour . There was a time when the little red wagon was an object of much curiosity as it rumbled along over the country roads and then the crowded streets from Arthur Place to the railway station . Today , as it hurried along with its precious load of well fitted Berkshires , all with that ideal type , it was no longer a matter of curiosity . That Berkshires from Arthur Place go to all parts of the country is a settled thing in the minds of the natives here . We have made no special effort to push the Berkshires to the front in this locality , knowing that the swine we send out will please the man who knows Berkshires , but slowly and surely this stubby nosed favorite of the packer and shipper is winning his way to the front here , and many new herds are springing up ai...

future , to the extent that nearly a hundred sows and gilts will be bred this spring at Arthur Place . Bennington , Mich . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Regarding the future outlook for the Berkshires , will say that the best way we have of judging the future is by the past ; and with that in view , and with my thirty years experience as a breeder of Berkshires , and with the fact before me that 1 have in the past five months visited some six or seven of the largest swine producing States , and have met breeders from many more , never in my experience have I seen so good a future outlook as at present . Every breeder Is reporting orders more than he can fill ; and with the show yard honors that have been won by the Berkshire , in competition with other breeds ; and with the fact conceded by all packers and consumers of the hog product , that the Berkshire hog comes the nearest to filling the requirements of the market and the wants of the consumer of today ,...

A Berkshire Awakening [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

A Berkshire Awakening Roulette , Potter Co ., Pa . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Your invitation has prompted me to write about Berkshire hogs in this vicinity . For years a few friends of the breed have kept up some enthusiasm for them , but most farmers prefer the large white breeds . However , the last year has seen an awakening to the Berkshire superiority and their friends have greatly increased and a few farmers now have breeding herds . Our herd boar is good stock and shows it in his daily life by his own style and carriage ; no one asks to see his papers for he certifies to his breeding . Sired by Lee Premier stock with Premier Poem 3 d for dam , he exhibits Premier blood in every line and action , and stamps all pigs with aristocratic style . Our herd contains seven sows of his get and are all very nice , both in size and grade . Many broods will be of his get among the nearer farms , and the famous name of Lee Premiers Poem 2 d 128999 will be often...
