CZ She gattjj totfim. ASTORIA, OREGON: Sl'XDAY MAY 10, 1B3 A Sax Fkaxcisoo man of gallant antecedents died tlio other day, and by will left Sj.000 "to the handsomest woman in the city." By the terms of the will all questions of morality must be ignored, and his executors and administrators are in no end of trouble. The worst of it is that is the first bequest and the estate can't be divided till that is paid. It is now asserted in London offi cial circles that the Si. Petersburg officials peremptorily refused to en ter into any agreement or treaty with England containing a pledge on the part of Kussia to refrain from making a forward movement on to Herat This announcement has in a great measure revived the war talk. The tories are indignant at what they term another slap in the face by Russia. The steamship Austral went from London to Sydney in thirty-five days, and consumed on the voyage 3,611 tons of coal; her coal bunkers hold 2,750 tons. The steamship Oregon consumes over 389 to...

m hc gattjj gtomu. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY MAY 12. 18EG SEWSPAPER LIBEL. The law of libel Las received a fresh aud reasonable interpretation in tbe suit of J. Appletou Wilson against tbe Chicago Tribune, where in damages of $100,000 were claimed for tbe pnblicatiou by tbe defendant of a statement that tbe plaintiff had been indicted for murder. A full re traction and apology were made on the following day. It was shown on the trial that tbe Tribune reporter had been deceived by an exhibition of a paper in the office of the state attor ney purporting to be an indictment of the plaintiff, and that the paper bore the signature of the state attor ney, but was uot signed by the fore man of the grand jury. Of course the reporter had no right to see the paper until it was returned into court. Even it the indictment had been found, the publication of it would have been premature and un justifiable, although not unlawful. Express malice being disproved by the retraction, aud there being no ...

m She gaUjj Ijtftotfatt. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY. MAY 13, J 885 REGARDING DISPATCHES. "The Astobiax would be the equal of any newspaper in the northwest if it had dispatches," is a remark lhat our friends frequently make, and is one which, without egotism, we may say is not entirely undeserved. This matter of dispatches is one that we have been working on for three years. We have two contracts secured, but find it hard to get any thing like decent terms. Whenever it can be done without seriously crip pling the business, Astorians will be given dispatches as full and com plete as it is possible to do. It costs a good, deal to run a daily newspaper as Tun Astobiak, and it is probable that in no department of work would the amount of labor and capital in vested pay a Bmaller percentage. But we look more to the future than the present for returns. Every newspa per has had its day of 'small begin nings and the largest and best news papers in the country are the result of patient effor...

m SIw gailjj gutfwftm. ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY MAY 10. 1885 SHORTER CAMPAIGNS. The voters of tho country are no longer iu favor of long campaigns, and the movement now on foot in several of tlio eastern states to have the state conventions this fall held late in the season, meets with no ob jection. The idea is an excellent one and should be generally adopted, not only this year, but -every year here after. The Chicago Herald well says: "Our political campaigns are of unconscionable length. They be gin iu the spring and extend all through the summer and fall. In presidential years there is nothing but politics. A national campaign need not occupy more than six or eight weeks, and an ordinary state canvass might bo made in two or three weeks just as well as in the same number of months. It is tho interest of tho workers, of course, that cam paigns should be long and expensive, but the people can do away with this infliction if they will. Should the disposition now manifested in sev...
