FOB TICK PRESIDENT ANDREW JOHNSON, OF TENNESSEE. A New Dodge In the House of Representatives, in the debate upon the joint resolution proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, so as tp abolish slavery throughout the country, some of the Copperheads, under the lead of Mr. Pruyn, of New York, declared that even by amendment of the Constitution the right to hold slaves could not be taken away. STATE JOURNAL, ALEXANDRIA: FRIDAY EVENING, JUNE 17, 1864. W. J. COWIiSIi, Principal Editor. B. W. GllililS ....Associate Editor FOB PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LIIC^LI, OF ILLINOIS. FOR TiOE PRESIDENT ANDREW JOHNSON, OF TENNESSEE. Vallandigham The bold and defiant course of Clement L. Vallandigham, in appearing again in Ohio in contempt of the United States authority, argues a concerted scheme on the part of Northern traitors to arouse armed resistance among the people, and to precipitate civil war upon all sections of the country, North as well as South. Were Vallandigham a patriot, who felt himself wronged and injured by an oppressive administration, he should at least, in such times as these, do his couutry the service *o remain away from her, in obedience to the will of that administration—for he well knows that his presence among the people at such a time will have the certain effect to cause excitement and probably sedition and bloodshed. But he is not a patriot—he is a double-dyed trai...

FOB VICE PRESIDENT ANDREW JOHNSON, , OF TENNESSEE. Rebel Outrages. Rebel violations of the laws of war and of the laws of civilization and humanity have been so often repeated during the war that but little more can be said, at this day, to show the cruelty with which hostilities are conducted on their part. If anything were needed, however, to increase the indignation and horror with which the world must view the acts of men who deliberately executed the massacre at Fort Pillow, it will be found in the dispatch of Secretary Stanton of this morning announcing that five of our general officers, prisoners of war, have been taken to Charleston and placed under fire of our batteries about that city. We are glad to see that the retaliation has been prompt, five rebel general officers having been despatched te Gen. Foster to ...
