The Fate of Sir John Franklin. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 12 November 1859

The Fate of Sir John Franklin. Return of the Exploring Yacht Fox — The Exploration and Discovery — Most Interesting Report by Captain McClintock. [From the London Times.] • • • * • On tho 2d of April our long projected spring journeys were commenced; Lieut. Hobson accompanied me as far as Cape Victoria, each of us had a sledge drawn by four men, and an auxiliary sledge drawn by six dogs. This was all the force we could muster. Before separating, we saw two Esquimaux families living out upon the ice in snowhuts : from them we learned that a second ship had been seen off King "William's island, and that she drifted ashore on the fall of the same year. From this ship they had obtained a vast deal of wood and iron. I now gave Lieutenant Ilobson directions to search for the wreck, and to follow up any traces he might find on King William's Island. Accompanied by my own party and Mr. Peterson, I marched along tlie east shore of King William's Island, occasionally passing deserteuf snow hu...

Unfair.—The San Francisco National has admitted into its columns a communication from a person, endorsed by it as a good Democrat, containing an uncalled for attack upon Gov. Weller because of his being a candidate for the U. S. Senate. The correspondent also objects to several other candidates, some he does not mention, and reserves his praise for B. F. Washington, who has been announced as a candidate for the office. The National does not indorse the attacks upon Gov. Weller, but it might as well have done so as to publish one from another pen. It is well known that we favor the election of Gov. Weller, but we have done so, and will so continue, without singling out other candidates, and attacking their merits as men and Democrats. If those Democrats opposed to Gov. Weller, think they will advance the prospects of their own favorites by resorting to personal detraction of the Governor, they are much mistaken, and will soon find their blows to fecoil upon themselves. All we ask for...

Ltte of a Printer.—Printers, it is said, die at an early age. This is doubtless caused by the noxious effluvia rising from the types, want of exercise, constant employment, and the late hoar to which their work is prolonged. There is no other class of human beings whose privileges are so few, whose labor is so continuous, whose wages are so inadequate as printers. If a "typo" be a man of family, he is debarred of th"c privileges of enjoying their society at all times, because his hours of labor are almost endless, and his hours ef Mswre so few that they must be spent to recruit his exhausted energies, and prepare him for the renewal of his toils.— Poor fellow ' he knows nothing of sociability, and is shut out from the world as a convict in a prison cell. Truly he is in the world but knows not of it. Toil—toil—toil, by night and by day, is his fate, until premature old age ends his existence. For the ■advancement of science, morality, and virtue, the chords of his heart are severed o...
