FIRST ANNUAL MESSAGE Of the Governor of the State of California. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 26 December 1849

FIRST ANNUAL MESSAGE Of the Governor of the State of California. GENTLEMEN OF THE SENATE AND ASEMBLY : The circumstances under which you have assembled are most new, interesting, and extraordinary—demanding our devout gratitude to the Supreme Being, the Creator and Father of us all. You compose the first Legislature of the first free American state organized upon the distant shores of the Pacific. How rapid, astonishing and unexampled, have been the changes in California. Twenty months ago California was inhabited by a sparse population — a pastoral people— deriving their main sustenance from their flocks and herds, and a scanty cultivation of the soil— their trade and business limited, and their principal exports consisting of hides and tnliow. Within that short period has been made the discovery of the rich, extensive and exhaustless gold mines of California ; and how great already have been its effects ? The trade and business of the country has been revolutionized and reversed— ...

PLACER INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 26 December 1849

PLACER INTELLIGENCE. The Placer. — The stormy weather of the last week has deprived us of much information from the mines. From the little intelligence we havo derived from the few minurti who have found their way into this city, we are led to conclude that the same influences have prevented operations to any extent in the diggings. We are told that tlione who are living in tents in expoHed places have suffered much from the recent Hou'thn east storms. Thorn) domiciled in well-built log cahirni, in dry localities, have been io comfortably situated aa to he enabled to laugh at the elements, while the occupants indulge in recounting past reminiscences and future prospects. — There are many pleasing features about a mountain life, in a rude and uncouth cabin, which few of the effeminate denizens of our large cities know or thiuk of. Seated around a comfortable fire, with few aspirations out of their reach, they indulge in the mirthful story and sung, of which every one's buoyant spirit...

WEDNESDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 26, 1849 APPALLING AND DESTRUCTIVE CONFLAGRATION [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 26 December 1849

WEDNESDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 26, 1849 APPALLING AND DESTRUCTIVE CONFLAGRATION LOSS OF PROPERTY EXCEEDING $1,000,000!! Our city has been visited by fire, and for the second time within the twelvemonth past are we called upon to record the disastrous career of conflagration. That we have dwelled in inexpressible fear of this calamity during the year which is nearly closed, we may confess, and that a dread of its terrible results we have, in conjunction with most of our citizens, entertained, should also be ack- nowledged. Averted by a power superhuman, through a succession of days and months, during which its occurrence would have entailed upon our city utter ruin, it came at last, and though ne'er again might an event of this nature take place under circumstances so especially favoring the escape of the city, we have to deplore the destruction of one of the finest and most flourishing portions of San Francisco. The flre originated in Dennison's Exchange, and, it is said, in the second...

Editorial Correspondence. [ At length we have received the letters from San Jose which should have reached as one week since. As they give a more satisfactory account of proceedings there, we ventnre to lay them before our readers though they be somewhat "out of date." ] Sam Jose, Dec. 16, 1849. I left San Francisco, after disappointment by the early sailing of the Mint, in the little steamboat Sacramento, at 2 p.m. yesterday. Although the sky looked threatening and the "white caps" promised an uneasy passage, we nevertheless came along safely and quietly by running close in shore. Our progress was very slow, though, and we wore finally obliged to anchor at 10 p. m. inside of one of the headlands that make into the Bay. Although it blew heavily during tho night and also rained, the little boat lay safely until morning, when we got up our anchor and reached the embarcadoro at the new town of Alveso (Alviso), about 11 a.m. to-day. We found the Mint here, just ready to start on her ret...
