Houston June 4 1870. •dt t«k ■1vbr. c#i-< When we flrat read tbe announce- ment that a bill bad been reported favorably npon in tbe Legislature for making an appropriation for cleaning oat the Colorado River, we thought it mast be * mistake- We know something of that river. Borne twenty-five or thirty miles above the mouth there is a rait corn* pletely across the rlveti which it would take upon a moderate estimate a half a million of dollars to remove. Below tbe raft the river spreads out into shallows, and at bo place osn three feet of water be found in low tides to enter Matagorda Bay- After entering tbe bay, Dog. Wsn«l reef runs from tbe main land to tbe pen- insula. and in low tide, a vessel drawing three &et of water conld hardly pass. . If the navigation of the bay and river were good, there are no settle- ments near the coast to create trade.
