As the number of applications for enlistment in the Alexandra Squad ron of the Victorian \Iounted Rifles has exceeded early expectations, H.Q. 2nd Armored Brigade have given per mission for the maximum number of recruits to be raised from 66 to 103. The great importance of this will be realised when it is understood that the larger the formation the greater the variety of training, and much more equipment will be made available. A larger permanent instructional staff will also be supplied to Alexandra. VISIT FROM COMMANDING ' OFFICER. The cdmnlandinig offlcc- ,of the regi ment will'be visiting Alexandra this month to inspect applications for en list, and training facilities, as well as two proposed courses for tank driv ing practice which will be on 28-ton modern tanks, and lighter armored vehicles. Death of Mr. II. J. Vallence. Another district resident has passed on, in the person of Mr. H. J. Val lence, a resident who was held in very high esteem. The late Mr. Vallence had carried out quite an amount of charitable work during his lifetime. He was secretary of the Mansfield and Alexandra Hospitals in years gone by. Although he received ,remuneration for his services, he carried out quite a large amount of voluntary work to further the interests, of those instii: tions. He was a first-class photographer, and evidence of his splendid-work in this category may be found in many homes throughout the district. Despite his great age of 7. years he progressed with the times, and a view of his office equipment both ;rt his shop and his office at the hospital during his period as ,secretary con vinced people who; viewed it that he was ahead of the times. Valedictory. Farewell to Mr. and Mrs A. E. Dodd and Farn ily. '1 here was a big assemblage of district residents at the Parish Hall on Monday night last, the occasion being to farewell and to pay tributes to Mr. and - Mrs. Dodd and family prior to their departure for Melbourne. Mr. Dodd has been stationed at the Alexandra Police Station for the past 10 years and had proved him self an efficient officer of the po lice force as well as a worthy citi zen of the district. The function on Monday night was testimony of the high esteem in which the guests of the evening were held. A varied programme was ar ranged and Rev. S. Taylor presi ded. During the. evening songs. were rendered by Mesdames Seymour and Ballinger, and Mes srs. J. Lister and C. Mintern. Mesdames Gillespie-and Nugent were capable accompanists. : A duet (instrumental) was also ren dered by Mrs. Gillespie and Mr. Mintern. Mr. G. E.
