Cycling Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 22 October 1898

Cyoung botes. . The Warrnambool road race is to take place to-day, 'The handicaps of the 86 riders are now published with a limit of one hoir and a half. Twelve more riders entered last year than this year, and this is accounted for by the Adelaide meeting on Saturday last, and the amateur meeting at St. Kilda clashing with the great road race. Last year the read race took place a month earlier, and was won by W. C, Jackson, Vaughan, the Bendigo rider came in first, but was disqualified for taking the short cut between Geelong and Werribee. The road has a great reputation for excel lence, but? this year the surface is not likely to be as good as usual, The racing at Adelaide on Saturday last was of a sensational character. In biblical phraseology between the limit and scratch man " was a great gulf fixed," which proved too formid able for the hack-markers to negoti ate so early in the season. To suppose that a man can begin, a new season in the same form in which he finished the las...

PERTINENT PARS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 22 October 1898

,PERTINENT .PARS. [Br HAWK-EtE.] A snapperrip of unconsidered trifles. Whilst knocking about the other day I happened to stumble up against an individual who, with a merry twinkle in his eye, and a very cunning expression on his face, indicated that he was bubbling with merriment. With a hearty slap on. the back, he ac costed me with Good-day - , " Do you want to hear something good I" I immediately thought of' the one "good thing" I wanted-nothing more or less than the. winner of the Mel bourne Cup-and. all my sporting in stincts were aroused, "Do . want to hear something good" I asked I Tell me,wliat's going-tio iti thb Cdp ? -My friend, who seemed on mischief bent, after reflecting for a moment, put it this way. " You back Broken Drum ; it's a real good thing," As my know ledge of racy matters is somewhat limited, I replied, "Why back Broken Drum 1 surely there are better horses than he in the Cup . Well, you see, said my companion, back Broken Drum, " hbecause it cannot be beate...

YARRA TRACK. 16th October. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 22 October 1898

YARRA TRACK. (From our own Correspomdcnt.) 16th October. Another rich find has leen made near Walker's, 15 miles from Marys ville, by-a .Mr. McOann, who is pro specting for a local syndicate. The reef is 4 ft. wide, and carrying splendid gold. The lease is south of the Golden Secret (Chester and Locke), and ad joins Reilly and Barton's lease,-botb of which have struck good gold. Work is being pushed on at Stock man's Rfeward, and the water race and battery site is nearly completed. Some of the machinery is on the ground, so things ought to be soon moving briskly. The Victorian Mount Morgan started crushing on Thursday last, and the cyanide plant, which ought to be com pleted within this next week, will afford shareholders an opportunity of soon knowing its value. Alluvial diggings are quiet around the district at present, but expect to hear something rich concerning them lately. The weather has been very warm, and has dried the roads up splendidly. As a conseqpence, numerous reptile...

BOOMERANG SHOTS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 29 October 1898

B*- ODMERANG SHOTS. rS ---------+------- r- Quiz. Probably some of your readers may a have been a little disappointed at not e seeing my usual contribution in last week's issue. Now, sir, you must know that. these communications were forwarded to you unknown to my old duchess; but now the cat's out of the t bag, through the persistent manner in which your smart lad (I mean the printer's devil) haunted my house, bothering my better half for "copy." Of course, the old girl was completely "ibamfoozled" as to what it all meant, and it took that lad same time to ex plain matters, and when fully seized of the facts-no, she didn't scream, but there is such a thing as what they :call "tantrums," and she collared and held on to one of these. The youth in his hurry to do a "git" could only hear Mre. Quiz vowing vengeance against all paper men, and thought my time would be better employed in attending to the more immedia e matters. 'How I I took your tip, and put a bit on the Caulfield Cup, ou...
