Why a Panic ? [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 28 March 1891

'Why a Panic ? A leading financier was recently asked, '?What makes a financial panic?' Ho tersely replied : ' It is simply a lack of confidence.' Tho commerce of the world is the creature of confidence. One-tenth, perhaps, of large business transactions are made in currency j the other nine-tenths are accomplished through the medium of personal cheques— mere pledges of con fidence. Business would come to a stand still U currency was generally demanded. There isn't onough of it to go aTound. A panic arises when nion, losing confidence, demand currency instead of cheques, tho currency cannot be had— there isn't enough of it, and the banks back tip what there is. Confidence is the basis of com mercial prosperity. The most intelligent people bank the heaviest on confidence, and prosperity follows. The singular thing is that, sometimes, men who prosper in thus placing confidence iu their follows in business transactions act as though in other matters (if oven creator moment, no reliance...

I saw the thousands of worthless hogs-will American nostrums flooding the Austra lian market year by year, month by month, of money left these shores annually iu return for those rubbishy articles, all of wliich made tlie country so much the poorer. I also knew that the exigencies of life in this country and tho cliinato necessitated the use of an artilicinl blond - maker to restore tho normal condition and vital forces which were so uiierv.iteJ by climatic and othor influences. I also saw the thin, pale, dulicnto, andattenuatcil men and women of Australian citio5,Ja:id studied tho causes and ways and tnea-.s of remedying the evil ; 1 saw that it w is impossible to bring lliu article required into popular favour except in the fonri of a patent 'medu-ine.
