IMPROBABLE BUT [NOME THE ¡LESS. TRUE. Mr Adam 'Gordon, of ¡the Castle of Ardoch, which stands on a rock above the waves of tho North Sea, was walk- ing in his grounds one evening when he heard a gun fired as a signal of dis- tress. Jt was a stormy night, and a strong wind was blowing. Gordon of Ardoch called his serrants and his ten- ants, and together they hastened to the beach, but no traces of the vessel were found, only wreckage that came floating to tho shore. Among it was a tiny wicker-work cradle, inside which was a baby girl still alive. Mr Gordon took the little waif of the sea home to his wife, and it was brought up with his daughters. The little girl grew up into a charming young woman, and was beloved by the Ardoch family. WHEN SHE AVAS SIXTEEIN. Mr Gordon was walking one evening iu his grounds when again he heard the alarm. Cartwright's Pictures. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 11 December 1920

Cartwright's Pictures. Theda Bara, the vampire, and Theda Bara, tho ideal wife, have come face to face. The noted screen star has proved that she is able to play the ono as af- fectively as she can play the other. In "La Belle Russo," which -opens this Fri- day at Cartwright's Pictures, Miss Bara plays the parts of two different charac- ters. One moment she is shown as the demure and devoted wife of an impover- ished artist: tho(next sees her as a woman who outwardly resembles tho first charac- ter, but whoso soul is black. She is a notorious woman of Paris, yearning for conquest, and absolutely unscrupulous. The conflict between these two women forms " tho climax of this absorbing photoplay, which was adopted for the screen from the drama by David Belasco. Miss Bar« scored a distinct triumph in tho dual ro'e. Also charming Shirley Mason in her lat- est "Love's Harvest," 5 acts; Serial; and Sunshine Comedy. S f» 1* T Problems for Criminologists. Perhaps tho moat fascinating- problem ol' «ill is what is known ¡is the Battersea 'Flat Mystery. One- night in the middle of July, 1910, an actor, Thomas Anderson, entered an unoccupied flat on the ground floor of a 'block of buildings du n street alf tho Bat- tersea Park-road. ¡He. ¡took off his booti, put them on the mantelshelf, and similarly disposed of a small handbag. Then he put on a pair of cu-rpet slippers. Ju his coat pocket ho had a. heavy life-preserver. In the flat above lived a lady with whom An- derson was on terms of the closest inti- macy. She -was a professor of elocution, and iu her company thia evening was An- derson's oldest eon, a youth of ninetoen. "Missing." [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 11 December 1920

í " Missing." A number of mysterious disappearances invariably follow any great catastrophe in ?which there is a sudden and heavy sacri- fice in human life on land or sea. A great war, such as that from which, we have just emerged, was bound to leave behind it many mysteries of missing men. A cer- tain number of these missing men may bo alive and remain alive for years, and yet for some cause or othor fail to communi- cate with their relatives. liven in ordinary civil life, when there is neither holocaust nor catastrophe to bo connected with tho mystery, men and wo- men are continually disappearing, and of , many of them THE 'FATE REMAINS FOR EVER UNKNOWN. .1 have during rocont years been brought into personal touch with tho search for missing relatives, and have dono my best to assist, but jn no case, has the mystery boon solved. "'WARE BACCA!" [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 11 December 1920

" ' WARE DACCA !" TJic Pussyfoot ure not going to be satis- fied with tho ¡total prohibition of beer, wino and spirits, and all 'forms of alcoholic refreshment. They are organising a big campaign to make tho use of tobacco a purmhablo offence. Wo aro to have the piping times of Peace without ibo pipe. It. is all very well to smile at tho cam- paign of those frenzied fanatics, but they are j'ri deadly earnest, and they have any amount of money behind them. Unless an officient opposition to their campaign is quickly organised and vigorously conducted THEY WILL GAIN THEIR ENDS. Encouraged <by success, thoy will presently endeavor to abolish all forms of theatrical entertainment and sport, and certainly Iboxing and horse, «racing. Pussyfoot hails from a land where until quite recently there ,was a law in force which made it a punishable offence for a man to kiss a wo- man in any public place, even if tho wo- man were his wife. Popularity. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 11 December 1920

Popularity. During tho last week we have had two cases in our immediate neighborhood of citizens of Ulverstone gaining appreciation from their co-mates for being popular. Taking them in tho order- they carno be- fore the public we read of Mr E. Hobbs, Ri.H.A., receiving a compliment from the Speaker of the House for being popular amongst his fellow members. It wasn't reported, but no doubt our worthy mem- ber blushed to tho back of his neck, but ho can take all that class of eye-wash they care to give him if ho is gaining Iiis point. He's a clovcrer man than Mr Whitsitt in many wa.ys, for the latter gen- tleman makes no bones about what he thinks, and is going to do on any sub- ject, and nobody needs to give his policy .a second thought, but not eo with our Mr Hobbs. He gets up on tho fonce occa- sionally, and wobbles about thero at the peril of his life until thereat has jumped, and then down he comes. Ho is what might be termed a clever exponent "of running with the hare, and hunt...
