EIGHTY MILES DRY. [Newspaper Article] — The Central Queensland Herald — 2 January 1930

EIGHTY MILES DRY. (For. the 'Central Queensland Herald'). I met the drovers on the morning of the fourth day out . from water ; during that time they had travelled some sixty miles and had about another twenty to do before they got a drink for their bullocks. Fine, big-framed bullocks they were, with hollow flanks and swollen eyes which denoted all too plainly that they were dry, very dry. (First Prize Winner in Story Competition.) flWEV were striding along with that methodical bovine stride peculiar to bullocks ou. a dry stage, a lon;r, slow, steady stride which devotes singular ity of purpose — to reach the welcome water in the shortest possible time. Every man was in his right place, one on each wing and one at the tail. Good men these. You could see at a glance by the way they kept their moving: mob together. They gave the bullocks plenty of room and yet not too much. They kept the mob mov ing along, but not no last they the slowest beast could not keep pace comfortably. Gauut, ...

BOYS PAGE. THE SCIENTIFIC CRACKSMAN—I. [Newspaper Article] — The Central Queensland Herald — 2 January 1930

BoYsfivGE THE SCIENTIFIC CRACKSMAN— I. BY ARTHUB B. REEVE. 'I'm willing to wager you a box of cigars that you don't know the most fascinating story in your own paper to-night,' remarked Kennedy, as I came in one evening with the four or five newspapers I was in the habit of reading to see whether they had beaten the STAR in getting any news of importance. 'T'LL bet I do,' I said, 'for I w,as one of about a dozen who worked it up. It's the Shaw nnurder trial. There isn't another that's even a bad second.' 'I am afraid the cigars will be on you, Walter. Crowded over on '.he second page by a lot of stale sehsa liou that everyoue has read for thu fiftieth time, now, you will find v.-net promises to be a real sensatioa, a curious half-column account of fbo sudden death of John G. FletJ'RT.' I laughed. 'Craig,' I said, 'when you put up a simple death from apo plexy against a murder trial, and such :t murder trial — well, you disappoint me — that's all.' 'Is it a simple case of apoplexy'-'...
