COUNTRY MINING AND GENERAL NEWS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) [Newspaper Article] — North Australian — 19 October 1883

'COUNTRY MINING AND GENERAL NEWS, - - ? ---~ . (FROM OÜR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) YOUR readers will be pleased to learn that the country between Collett's Creek and Fort Darwin Camp has been visited daring the past few days with some good heavy showers, and, although not - - sufficient to fill the water-courses, it has been enough to cause the grass to spring at most of the camping places. I think r we may safely conclude that the dry season has broken up, and not before it was time. The season on the whole has been most trying to the teamsters, as, in addition to the extra work which the ?-. ? ' straying of their draught cattle in search of feed has caused, the unfortunate drivers have suffered considerably for the want of a drink of water. At many of the waterholes quantities of dead cattle are lying rotting , on the banks and polluting what little water there is to such an extent as to make it unser- viceable for both man and beast. While speaking of this I must not omit to mention th...

OPEN COLUMN. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — North Australian — 19 October 1883

OPEN COLUMN. LETTEKS to the Editor must be couched in respectful and simple language, and as concise as possible. In every case the writer's name is required, not necessarily for publication, but as a guarantee of good faith.] To THE EDITOB. SIB,-For many years past it has been generally understood that the pas- toral interest of the Northern Territory was in the future to be one of the principal mainstays of thc colony, but I much fear that if we are to take as our example of results the experience of the past two seasons our expectations will be most signally disappointing. All credit is due to the spirited enterprise of Messrs. Fisher and Lyons, who have gone'? to such an immense outlay in stocking the vast tracts of pastoral lands they have selected in the Northern Territory, and no one can help sympa- thising with them in the disastrous results which have so far attended their enterprise. I think it is high time that those interested in the advancement of squatting in the N.T. ...

GREAT GOLD ROBBERY. WE take tho following telegrams relating to tho robbery at the Mel- bourne Commercial Bank from tho QUEENSLANDES of Sopt. 29th: Melbourne, Sept. 23. Thc police have arrested a young man |nanied Richard Corbett, son of thc messenger in the Commercial Bank, for stealing tho fourteen bars of gold and a number of notes from that bank. It appears that Corbett was apprenticed to a blacksmith in Sydney, bot move recently was taken into the Commercial Bank to assist his father ; which was not long be- fore the previous mysterious robbery of 1000 sovereigns from the bank. Young Corbett was lately reported to be in Sydney again*, and he was telegraphed to, but a reply was re- ceived stating that he had gone to New Zealand. In reality, however, he came to Melbourne, went to a locksmith, and obtained duplicate keys of the bank strong room. N. T. ASSOCIATION. [Newspaper Article] — North Australian — 19 October 1883

_N. T. ASSOCIATION. OUR telegrams of a few weeks ago mentioned the pleasing fact that an association had been formed in Adelaide to look after the interests of the Nor- thern Territory. The full account of the meeting held for that purpose has just come to hand, and wc think an abridged account of the proceedings will be interesting to many Tcrritorians. The meeting was attended by about 50 gentlemen. Mr. J. G. Pitcher occupied thc chair, and was the first speaker. The question of forming such an association, he said, had long been in his mind, but lately, at the instance of several friends who had lately visited the Territory, and who had now come to Adelaide on its business, he had become more impressed with the necessity of doing something to bring together those who were thc friends cf what eventually would be the most prosperous portion of South Aus- tralia. The passing of the Railway Bill, he thought, meant the beginning j of a new epoch in the history of the Northern Territor...
