Farming Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 11 May 1900

Farming Notes. ^'nYrli anure.-— Speaking to his fellow farmers at a club meeting a South Australian farmer thus delivers himself on the subject of the utilization of farm yard manure :— There is a general opin ion prevailing amongst fanners, that form yard manure of any kind will heat the soil too much and cause cereal crops es pecially to scortch in hot weather, an idea from which I differ, for farm .yard manure of any kind if judiciously 'used will not heat the soil, but tend to keep . it moist and cool in hn+ ™Oo+l.n^ i... making more loose and friable soils which are too porous and open to keep moisture — a point not to be overlooked when we consider that a plant cannot travel over a space of country like a horse or sheep gathering up its food as it pass es along, but has to remain stationary and send out its roots in search of food. It is impossible fot the small rootlets to penetrate the soil if it is too hard and caked. An argument we often hear is that we cannot gather enoug...

Stray Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 11 May 1900

Stray Notes. fBy 'Diogexbs.'! Some lady (!) has been horse- whipping an official in Victoria for expressing his opinion that the much-talked-of Boers were more , sinned against than sinning. Of course thousands of people in Austra lia senselessly shout ' Bravo, my lady ; he deserves it,' etc. ! but the majority are so blinded by prejudice that they c&ttuot see that these short-sighted at tempts to gag a man is to curtail that liberty which some assert the war is wciiig wagcu tu ixwiouu. udiima, o,g-uu, applaud, not because they think the man in question was wrong in holding such views, but, because they are afraid of being regarded as ' disloyal ' if they refused to cheer. o o o Timidity and time-serving of this kind aro quite unworthy of Christian men, not, to say reformer*. Surely the lady might have written to the Press, giving her reasons for differing from the gentle man she whipped ! By squelching speech she is not only doing an ungene rous and cruel action to the indi...

Do You Want A New Church Or Schoolroom ? [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 11 May 1900

Ho You Want A New Church Or Schoolroom ? In one of the outlying districts of Northampton every Thursday and Satur day afternoon a curious spectacle is to be Been. The congregation of Christ Church is building a new Sunday school and parish room with their own hands. Christ Church is a new edifice situated in a new parish. It was only opened twelve months ago, but the work has so devoleped that it has been found neces sary to considerably extend the parochial buildings. There was no money in. Jthe treasury, but the the Church Council, consisting of the vicar (Rev. C. Bach) \nd a number of well-known gentlemen '3f the district, were equal to the occasion. They decided to erect the much-needed feuil dings themselves, with the assistance! of v oluntary labour. The firm of contrac tors which built the the church offered to Bup ply the materials at cost price, and a por tion of the fund required to pay for them was guraateed by the vicar. The plans were prepared for nothing by a I«c4 arch...

By some strange analogy many of our farmers have become somewhat mixed in their ideas regarding the Farmers and Settlers' Association and the Farmers and Settlers' Co-operative. Company. That these two bodies are separate and and distinct from one another is so ap parent that it appears unnecessary to ovniifirtt.fi on the matter. However. rather than l'isk that a further adjourn ment of the debate should take place at the next meeting regarding the advis ability of forming a branch of the Associ ation, \re will, as fir as practicable, ex plain the -wide divergence existing between the Association and the Go operative Company. Brandies of the Farmers and Settlers' Association have been formed throughout the colony for the distinct object of allowing farmers the right of having a hand in our land legislation, 'which object cannot be ac complished, except collectively, or, more plainly speaking, by the farmers forming an union. Another object of this Assso ciation is the question of ta...
