A TRIP THROUGH NEWGATE GAOL. [Newspaper Article] — Kiama Reporter — 22 September 1886

A TRIP THIQUGH NEWGATE -AOL. A COR1 ESPONDiN'P of a A?eurican paper writes:--WIhen I was in London a short tine nago I visited Newgate gaol, into which but few sightseers penetrate, and an inspec tion of which can only be obtained by a written order. Tihe great solid.looking building, in tihe street named after it, stands just where, busy London conmmences, and seems to cast a gloom even on the foggy, snoke-begrimned quarter known to the post man as London E.O. Newgatoe has stood in all its grim importance for more than six cenoturiecs, and historians say that they have read of King John comnmanding the sheriffs of London to repair tihe gaol, and of King ]Henry I. imprisoning those astute officials for lhaving allowed a convict to escape. During the great fire of London Newgate gaol wvas utterly destroyed, It was rebuilt in a strongeor fashion, only to be destroyed again during, the Gordon riots, when a crowd of desperadoes forced their way into one of the keeper's houses, deliberat...
